This week, the Secretary of Agriculture and Supply of São Paulo, Guilherme Piai, met with the mayor of Itapetininga, Jeferson Brun, and the managing partner of Equilíbrio Fertilizandos, Clayton Mônaco Freitas, to discuss an investment of almost R$ 50 million for fertilizer production in the municipality. The initiative will generate approximately 400 direct and indirect jobs.

Brazil is the largest global importer of fertilizers. In January 2024, the imported volume was the highest in the last five years, with a total of 2,77 million tons, according to the Logistics Bulletin of the National Supply Company (Conab). With this in mind and considering Brazil's importance for global food security, the State Department of Agriculture is seeking to support policies that contribute to national fertilizer production, making São Paulo and the rest of the country less dependent on fluctuations in the international fertilizer market. .

“This large investment, of almost R$50 million from Equilíbrio Fertilizandos, a 100% Brazilian company, together with the City of Itapetininga, is an initiative that makes us proud. We want more national companies producing fertilizers and we will encourage everyone who wants to invest in São Paulo”, highlighted Guilherme Piai.

Productivity and infrastructure

The municipality of Itapetininga, in the Metropolitan Region of Sorocaba, is the one with the highest soybean productivity in Brazil, and represents almost 30% of São Paulo's production of the grain with more than 1,2 million tons produced on 296.685 hectares, with a yield of 4,1 tons per hectare. The data are from IBGE for 2021. The city's soil fertility is explained by the diversification of agricultural crops.

The meeting also discussed the installation of a concrete bridge with a metallic structure by the Department of Agriculture in Itapetininga, which will contribute to infrastructure and local development, improving the flow of production and the living conditions of the population.
