We tested the newest and most technological member of the Mahindra family of tractors. The 86-110 P is a 110hp cabin tractor, with a powershift transmission of 16 forward and 16 reverse gears, which arrives to compete for a new market share

On these trips we take with the Cultivar Máquinas team, to test and evaluate the equipment, surprises always appear. We have had the opportunity to visit surprising places, meet incredible people, see different situations and machines of the most different types and stages of technological development.

When we found out that we were going to test a new Mahindra tractor and that it would be in Minas Gerais, more particularly in the Zona da Mata Mineira region, where cattle, beef and milk production is characterized, we immediately thought of a tractor with those characteristics. hallmarks of the Mahindra brand, simplicity and rusticity, which we had seen and confirmed in the tractors previously tested by us, the 2025 model, evaluated in Vale dos Vinhedos, in Serra Gaúcha, and the 6075 model that we tested in the Santo Alécio line location, city of Ibiam, 57 kilometers away from Joaçaba, in the state of Santa Catarina.

To our surprise, none of that happened. We were surprised by a different Mahindra. A product that is much more technologically advanced and already suited to the requirements required of a tractor that is sold in the rigorous markets of the European community.

The history of Mahindra is very interesting. Of Indian origin, it was born as a company shortly after the Second World War and arrived in Brazil only in 2016, settling in the city of Dois Irmãos, in Rio Grande do Sul, to manufacture, import and sell its products in the country. The arrival of brand was through Bramont, a Chilean company that until 2016 held the sales rights for Mahindra in Brazil. After the announcement of the closure of the Manaus factory, which produced Mahindra automobiles and Benelli motorcycles, the brand continued with the production of agricultural tractors, however, as it was already following separate paths, as an individual factory and always acting independently, the agricultural branch continued.

In Turkey, Mahindra owns the Erkunt Group, which, in turn, has an export brand called ArmaTrac. ArmaTrac produces several tractor models between 50hp and 120hp, with different configurations, from single-wheel drive and auxiliary front-wheel drive (TDA), with open post or cab, for different types of crops. The market for these models extends across Europe (Germany, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Greece, Kosovo, Latvia, Macedonia, Moldova, United Kingdom, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine), Africa (South Africa, Algeria, Ethiopia, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia), the Caribbean (Antigua), Asia (Philippines, Iraq and Japan) and the Middle East (Jordan).

This tractor that arrives in Brazil will be the same as the model sold in the best markets in Europe, and before the Nationalization Plan is fully implemented, it will come with all the items that characterize it in these countries where it meets strict market guidelines, to protect the environment. environment and workers. Immediately only the tire specification will be the item to be changed, as we will explain below.

Mahindra uses a logical system to designate the tractor models in this series, in this case, the one we evaluate is 86-110 P, where the 86 designates the series, the 110 represents the engine power in hp according to the ISO TR 14396 Standard and the P stands for Premium. This line should be a differentiator in Mahindra's portfolio in the country, with the line of tractors up to 100 hp following a simpler standard and with a lower specification, while the 86 series will be the most qualified line.

At first glance, this new series is already impressive with its appearance. When you start to get to know the specifications, you can see that it is a product that will compete for the market with the best brands in the country. The launch of this series took place on February 4th, in a live event, for all dealers and some special guests. The pandemic prevented the planned in-person event from being held.

Since its launch in the country, 20 units of this model have already been sold, all of which have already been delivered and are working in the field. Of the total that arrived in the country, four were reserved for demonstrations by dealerships and customers, as well as for testing by engineering and marketing teams.

As we said, this model, in this power range, will fight for the market that covers the average grain producer and will also retain the customer who works in family farming and who needs a larger tractor.

Motor

The engine that powers this tractor is from Perkins, model 1104-44T + T3059 (MAR-1), four-cylinder with 4.400cm3 of displacement. Although this engine has already been used by other brands of tractors, including those produced in the country, the T-3059 version is recent and technologically superior.

One of the highlights of this new model is the mechanical fuel injection system, using a Delphi rotary injection pump, and compliance with Tier 3B and MAR-1 emissions standards is done through a gas recirculation system, in the drive. valve control, without the need for an external valve or Arla tank. In this power range, it is still possible to control emissions of polluting gases with the conventional injection system, without necessarily switching to the electronic injection system.

The air intake system is made with the aid of a turbocharger and an air cooling radiator, intercooler. The incoming air is cleaned using a double-element filter, the second of which is safety.

Evaluated using the ISO TR 14396 methodology, this engine produces 110 hp of maximum power at a speed of 2.200 rpm. From the engine's characteristic curves, it can be seen that, in the range between 2.200rpm and 2.300rpm, the power is constant. Maximum torque, obtained at 1.400rpm, is 416Nm. From the analysis of the power and torque behavior, a torque reserve slightly greater than 18% is verified, between the power and maximum torque revolutions. This performance was demonstrated in a dynamometric test lasting 60 hours of operation, with the fuel temperature at 40 degrees Celsius, measured at the injection pump.

Transmission

The transmission of power from the engine to the wheels begins with a clutch system, which uses a double disc with a ceramic coating material and a mechanical drive. The transmission is from the renowned ZF brand, model T-557-L, made up of two groups (slow and fast), four mechanical gears (1, 2, 3 and 4) and a powershift or Hi-Lo system, which inserts another marches between two synchronized speeds. Furthermore, a reverser means that the same number of forward gears is also what we have in reverse.

Powershift transmission provides 16 forward and 16 reverse gears

For the user to choose the working speed, there will be three levers available, one for choosing the group, reduced or direct, one for choosing any of the four speeds and the switch on the gear lever, for choosing the powershift gear. which can be changed without using the clutch and without the need to stop the tractor or reduce engine speed. In this way, 16 forward speeds and 16 reverse speeds are achieved. In the speed diagram it is possible to verify the presence of at least six speeds in the most frequent field work range, between five and ten kilometers per hour. The group change operation is done by manual selection, using a lever positioned below the seat. The gear shift lever is located to the right of the operator's seat and in front of the side console.

The power take-off (TDP) is one of the differentiators of this model, as there are four versions available. On a single axis, with six splines, it is possible to have the following angular speeds: 430rpm, 540rpm, 750rpm, which is equivalent to the economical 540 (540E), and 1.000rpm, which can also be used as the economical 750rpm version (750E).

Locking the differential, necessary on occasions with high soil humidity and low displacement capacity, can be done by activating a switch on the side console. The front driving axle is centrally driven by Erkunt and the front-wheel drive can be switched on and off by pressing a switch.

Hydraulic system

The basis of the hydraulic system is a triple gear pump that serves, in addition to the three-point hydraulic system, the remote implement control system. This pump, made up of a sequence of three parts, has two oil reservoirs. The first part of the pump serves to drive the entire hydraulic system and the flow and pressure necessary for the set of remote control valves, with its dedicated filter used only in this circuit. The second part of the pump is exclusive to the steering system that uses a closed hydraulic circuit. The third portion of this pump serves the transmission system, to drive the hydraulic cylinders that drive the clutch, front axle, lock and TDP, and is also used to drive the clutch packages of the transmission's powershift system.

Only for the three-point hydraulic system and the remote control is a maximum flow of 60 liters per minute used. We should point out that one of the highlights of this model is the presence of hydraulic drive of the lower right arm by a hydraulic cylinder, as well as the third point of the three-point hydraulic system. The lower arms have quick-connect terminations. This assembly is not common on tractors sold in Brazil.

In this tractor, all activation and operation configuration of the three-point hydraulic system works through a control panel with switches and indicator lights. The three-point hydraulic system is Category II and has a lifting capacity of up to 5.000kgf. The maximum pressure of the entire system is 190kgf/cm2.

When controlling the lifting arms, the system allows the selection of the maximum height, speed at which the arms can be lowered, configuration of the working depth and the sensitivity with which the system will control the depth and traction. To assist the operator, there is light signaling for each condition of the three-point lifting system.

The remote implement control system consists of four double-acting, quick-connect VCRs, with two valves dedicated to the third point and lower arm. The four levers, positioned on the side console, are activated to open and close the hydraulic cylinders, placed on the third hydraulic point and on the lower right hydraulic arm to adjust engagement and leveling and for those implements activated by the VCR valves.

Technical characteristics

The configuration and offering of tire options were some of the items modified in relation to the model sold in other countries, when this model was brought to Brazil. The Mahindra 86-110 P tractor being sold in the country uses front tires measuring 340/85 R24 – 13.6R24 R1. At the rear, the measurement is 460/85R34 - 18.4R34 R1. In the approval and release phase, there are more measures for future availability as optional items.

To adjust the weight/power ratio and static weight distribution, up to ten pieces of 30kg weights can be combined, plus the weight of the weight support, which is a tool box. It's really cool that the manufacturer made great use of this space. The rear wheels can each be loaded with three weights of 50kg each, plus the volume of liquid ballast, which depends on the size of the tire used.

Very difficult to be offered in our country by other competitors, in this model Mahindra offers an air compressor with a reservoir on the side of the tractor, which can be used with an air intake at two points with quick coupling, one inside the cabin and the other outside. , next to the air reservoir. A front loader set is also available as an optional item.

The fuel tank is made of polypropylene with a capacity of up to 110 liters and is located below the ladder, on the side of the tractor.

There are three radiators to cool the temperature, one dedicated to the cabin air conditioning system, one exclusively for the turbocharger system intercooler and the third for the engine coolant. Access to all engine components, electrical system, radiators, etc. This is done by opening the hood, which hinges upwards and backwards.

Equivalent to the best models, the Mahindra is equipped with front fenders with an impact absorption system, through articulation. The brake acts on the semi-axles of the rear wheels with oil-filled discs, but there is also action on the front wheels, which, with the help of auxiliary front-wheel drive (TDA), automatically connects it when necessary.

The drawbar is an oscillating type, with hitch height adjustment and as an option the customer can purchase the tractor with a blade support or front shell.

Cabin

The cabin is one of the highlights of this tractor, in our opinion. Although this model is offered in a platform or cab version, the one we tested had a cabin that impressed us positively. With excellent vibration absorption, based on cushions with a vertical axis at the front and pneumatic bags at the rear, we feel the effects of good design in the field. As for access to the cabin, it is via a staircase with three steps on each side, the last being articulated, and wide doors. Therefore, unlike most current tractors, entry and exit can be done on both sides of the tractor.

Compliance with Brazilian regulatory standards NR 12 and 31 is complete and, without a doubt, the quality and the way in which safety requirements are met are due to the fact that this model is sold in Europe, where the rules for manufacturing, marketing and and use are very restricted.

The cabin is spacious with a large glass area and a good air conditioning system.

The user communication and command and control interfaces are much more developed and ergonomic than in the models we tested from the brand. There is a side panel positioned on the console, where in front are the two gear and inverter levers, the four VCR system levers, the throttle switch, the entire three-point hydraulic system control, with several positive features. There is a switch to raise, lower and lock the hitch system at three points, including a lock key for movement and transport. On a small panel, all the signs are illuminated to indicate the functions of the hydraulic system.

In front of the steering wheel, which has position adjustment, there is a digital panel with basic information. At the top of the windshield there is a retractable front curtain that helps block direct sunlight.

The cabin is equipped with a very efficient internal air conditioning system and air filtration is done by an activated carbon element that cleans the external air before it enters the cabin. The manufacturer also equipped this cabin with a pressurization system that allows the pressure inside to be slightly higher than the pressure outside, thus preventing the entry of any material that could pass through doors and windows. This feature allows this model to be used with chemical application machines, such as sprayers.

The tractor rollover protection structure (ROPS) is incorporated into the cab structure and approved for use in the European community.

The main seat is equipped with mechanical absorption, with adjustment of height and inclination of the headrest, operator weight, position of approach to the armrest and backrest inclination. The quality is very close to a pneumatic absorption seat. There is also an auxiliary seat, which can be folded against the side of the cabin, making it easier to move around.

As for internal and external lighting, the manufacturer made a combination of halogen and LED headlights and lights.

Test at Fazenda Santana

For the test we had the availability of a harrow with 14 28-inch discs from the manufacturer Santa Isabel, which has a cutting width of 1.968mm and weighs approximately 1.652kg. Our test work involved making several passes in the longitudinal direction of the plot, alternating gears and using the powershift system.

The test site was a plot of agricultural land at Fazenda Santana, located in the district of Sarandira, in the municipality of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. The farm is 30km away from the city of Juiz de Fora and has 180 mining bushels, which is equivalent to approximately 871 hectares. The farm's main activity is the production of beef cattle and previously the production of dairy cattle. It has an architecturally very beautiful headquarters, but reminiscent of the times of slavery, with its large house, water mills and slave quarters.

We had the support of the manufacturer's representative, engineer Gilberto Dutra, Product Marketing specialist at Mahindra, who demonstrated all his knowledge of the new model and its features and had to face our surprise and doubts with the new configuration of the 86 series model. Mr. Andrey Andrade, from AyA Comercio de Tratores, and Mr. Celio Vicente Laurindo, Seu Dedé, machine operator on the farm, who, despite being a little jealous that we were working with his tractor, supported the mission of learning about the technical particularities of the tractor. , gave us all the help to carry out the test.

The company AyA Comercio is a tractor dealership that represents Mahindra in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais. It is a family involved in agriculture, and in addition to selling agricultural equipment, it has been a producer, involving children and father, for many years. We were welcomed for dinner with the family and recognized their love for the business.

After the test, we highlighted some positive characteristics of this tractor, such as the comfort of the cabin, the quality of the engine, which never suffered under the loads applied, demonstrating a good torque reserve. We also positively highlight the solution to facilitate attachment of implements to the three-point system, with two points equipped with hydraulic cylinders. The synchronized transmission, with inverter and powershift, with 16 gears also requires emphasis.
