Cycloxaprid is a neonicotinoid insecticide used in agriculture, particularly to control pests resistant to other similar compounds. It is effective against sucking and chewing insects.

Common name (ISO): Cycloxaprid

Synonyms: Wenlong, Cycloxaprid 25% WP, Cycloxaprid OD (trademarks)

Gross chemical formula: C14H15ClN4O3

Number CAS: 1203791-41-6

Chemical class: neonicotinoid insecticide.

Release year: 2018 (full registration in China for agricultural use, including formulations such as 25% WP for aphid control on rice and cabbage).

Development history: Cycloxaprid was jointly developed by East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) and Shanghai Shengnong Pesticide Co., Ltd. It was first reported in 2008 in scientific studies on the synthesis of cis-nitromethylene neonicotinoids. In 2011, ECUST advanced development as the first cis-nitromethylene neonicotinoid insecticide, targeting imidacloprid-resistant pests such as aphids, whiteflies, and lepidopteran pests in rice crops. Provisional registration occurred in 2016, followed by full registration in August 2018 in China, for aphid control on rice and cabbage. Mass production began in 2022 by Shanghai Shengnong, marking its widespread commercialization. It is patented in China and via PCT internationally, with emphasis on its efficacy against resistant populations and unique mode of action.

Mode of action: Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist, acting systemically (absorption and translocation within the plant). It binds to the binding site on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, causing neuronal hyperpolarization and paralysis in insects, with high potency against imidacloprid-resistant hemipteran pests. It is distinguished by its antagonistic action on the homopentameric chlorinated histidine receptor (CHRN) channel, the first of its kind among neonicotinoids, which contributes to its effectiveness against resistance.

Patent numbers: CN102657189B and others.
