Fendt presented today (27/2) a hydrogen-powered tractor prototype. It was during a summit on hydrogen promoted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy of the State of Bavaria (Germany).

Fendt is developing hydrogen-powered tractor prototypes with fuel cells to investigate the performance potential of hydrogen in agricultural machinery. These tractors will be tested on two farms in the Haren region during the project period, which also aims to research the technical requirements for hydrogen infrastructure suitable for agriculture.

Together with other partners, the company participates in the agricultural model project H2Agrar in Lower Saxony to research hydrogen infrastructure for agricultural use. Prototype hydrogen-powered tractors will be delivered for use on farms in Haren in April 2023. The aim of the project is to establish a hydrogen infrastructure in the Emsland model region, with a focus on reducing CO2 emissions in agricultural vehicles. The project has already won the DLG Agrifuture Concept Award 2022.

Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian State Minister for Economy, Regional Development and Energy, highlighted the importance of hydrogen for solving problems in the agroforestry sector. Energy generated from renewable sources, such as agro-PV and wind energy, can be used to produce hydrogen, as can biogas and forestry waste.
