The prestigious professor at Oregon State University (USA), doctor Sabry Elias, winner of the Seed Science Award 2022 awarded by the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) 2022, will be in Brazil at the invitation of the Brazilian Association of Seed Technologies (ABRATES) to give three lectures at the XXI Brazilian Seed Congress. The largest event in the area of Seed Science and Technology in Latin America, CBSementes takes place from September 12th to 15th at Expo Unimed, in Curitiba (PR).
Doctor Sabry Elias is professor of Seed Science and Technology, Department of Crop & Soil Science, Oregon State University (USA). He received the award about a month ago in recognition of his contributions and achievements as a scientist, during the Scientific Society's Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.
CSSA's annual awards are presented for exceptional contributions to crop science through national education and international service and research.
"I am truly honored to receive this award. For me, it is a vote of confidence from my fellow academic seed scientists at the University of Florida, University of California, Davis, Cornell University and Virginia Tech, who nominated me and they wrote letters supporting me. The award gives me energy to continue producing more research and publications for the scientific community," he said.
Sabry Elias received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Michigan State University and has become an internationally recognized educator and researcher through his publications. He is senior author of “Seed Testing: Principles & Practices”, one of the leading books in this area worldwide and is used in many universities, seed laboratories and the seed industry. The work has a critical impact on understanding and improving seed quality testing nationally and internationally. He is also the author and co-author of several books, manuals and many articles.
At the XXI Brazilian Seed Congress (CBSementes) Sabry Elias will give three lectures. The first of them will be on Tuesday, the 13th, from 8 to 9 am, where the topic "Different Seed Analysis Organizations - One Objective" will be addressed.
According to Sabry, the purpose of this presentation is to review the roles of seed testing organizations, accreditation systems in seed testing laboratories, and the difference between seed testing and seed certification programs.
The presentation will also cover the objectives of the quality management system in any seed testing laboratory and clarify how seed testing organizations can serve seed laboratories. Finally, it will provide tips on how a seed laboratory decides which organization to join.
Still on the 13th, Sabry Elias will give another presentation in the late afternoon, from 17:50 pm to 18:30 pm, on "Factors that influence the variability of test results between laboratories and the impact on the seed industry". According to the researcher, the lack of uniformity in seed test results between laboratories causes problems for the seed industry.
The purpose of this presentation is to identify the types of errors in the rejection and acceptance of seed samples, and to discuss the sources and factors that contribute to variability in test results within and between laboratories. Finally, it will discuss tolerances in seed testing and provide ways to measure and manage variability within and between laboratories.”
On Wednesday, the 14th, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, Sabry Elias will give a lecture "How Does Seed Drying Affect Seed Quality"? The purpose of this presentation, explains Sabry, is to review the seed drying process in the field and in the laboratory in relation to quality.
The presentation will also discuss the effects of over- and under-drying seeds. Additionally, it will describe the most common drying methods in the field and laboratory and when each method should be used. Finally, the factors that must be considered when drying seeds will be discussed to maintain the quality (viability and vigor) of the stored seeds", adds Sabry.
