Agricultural engineer Bruno Belorini is now based in Modena (Italy)
The Government of Minas, through the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa), and the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) will hold, on September 20th, in the BDMG auditorium in Belo Horizonte, the Workshop – Actions for Improvement Competitiveness of the Coffee Production Chain in Minas Gerais.
During the event, the results of the “Strategic Diagnosis of the Agroindustrial Coffee Production Chain in Minas Gerais” carried out by UFV will be presented. “In September last year, Seapa entered into an agreement with the university to eliminate the bottlenecks that affect coffee growing in our state. All agents in the production chain were interviewed, including segments located outside the gate, inputs, retail, producers, industries up to the final consumer”, details Seapa's Strategic Affairs advisor, José Eduardo Ferreira.
According to UFV assistant professor Gustavo Bastos Braga, the target audience for the research was meticulously selected to include the main agents from the different segments that make up the complex coffee production chain, with a focus on the regions with the highest production and processing. The regions covered were South, Southwest, Matas de Minas, Cerrado and Chapadas de Minas. “The diagnosis involved more than 50 interviews with key figures in all links of the chain, covering more than 20 hours of recordings. The results of this study will provide a solid basis for making strategic decisions in both the public and private spheres”, he details.
In addition to presenting the global and regional obstacles that affect the profitability and competitiveness of the coffee chain in Minas Gerais, the workshop will propose and discuss solutions to improve the performance and competitiveness of the production chain.
Coffee growing is a sector that plays a crucial role in both Minas Gerais agribusiness and the state's economy. The country's main producing state, the estimated Minas Gerais harvest for 2023 is 27,8 million bags, representing approximately 51% of the national harvest.
The product is also the flagship of Minas Gerais agro exports. Last year, the state exported 38,5 million bags, achieving revenue of US$6,9 billion. This value represented 45% of the total value of agricultural exports from Minas Gerais.
