Cover crops have been used as an alternative to diversify annual, semi-perennial and perennial cropping systems in different regions of Brazil. In order to provide information about grasses, forages, legumes and oilseeds such as canola, rye, brachiaria, sorghum, lupins, wheat, crotalaria, sunflower and various grasses, the book "Practical Guide to Cover Plants: phytotechnical aspects and impacts" has just been published. on soil health".
The publication contains practical recommendations for 49 cover crops grown in Brazil. Divided into Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter plants, the work provides general characteristics, phytotechnical information, indications and limitations of use and impact on soil health management both for single crops (one species) and for a consortium of two species, or mixes with three or more species in the same area.
The book was prepared by the Soil Health & Management Research Group (SOHMA), from the Department of Soil Science at Esalq/USP, coordinated by professor Maurício Roberto Cherubin. “We hope that this work will be useful in spreading the knowledge and use of cover crops in Brazilian agriculture. The diversification of production systems, using cover crops, is the key to more productive, resilient and sustainable agriculture”, highlights the professor.
Postgraduate students Martha Lustosa Carvalho, Beatriz da Silva Vanolli, Bruna Emanuele Schiebelbein, Daniel Aquino de Borba, Felipe Bonini da Luz, Gabriela Marques Cardoso, Larissa de Souza Bortolo, Maria Emília Moreira Marostica and Victória Santos Souza signed the work.
