VI Embrapa Clima Temperado Scientific Initiation and Postgraduate Meeting
The event presents a space for the dissemination, promotion, monitoring and discussion of scientific initiation and postgraduate work
Between June and September this year, technicians from the Agribusiness Geographic Information System (Siga MS), a tool developed by the Association of Soy Producers of Mato Grosso do Sul (Aprosoja/MS), carried out a survey of the state's crops with the aim of monitoring the development of the 2nd corn harvest 2015/2016. As a result, it was found that, at the end of this cycle, Mato Grosso do Sul reached a weighted average of 58,4 sc/ha and, due to these averages, state production is 6.097.745 (6 million) tons.
Drop above 30%
The numbers were released this Wednesday (28) by the entity and indicate production 33,5% lower than the initially projected value. At the beginning of planting, it was estimated that production would be 9,165 million tons. However, excessive rainfall at the beginning of planting, drought and the occurrence of frost during the grain development phase caused direct and significant impacts, causing the resulting significant drop.
"This was an extremely complex and challenging 2nd harvest. The various weather events hit the crops hard and brought down the results. Our expectation, now, is that the summer harvest will be positive", says the president of Aprosoja/MS, Christiano Bortolotto.
Caution
"However, for this to happen, we need a favorable climate so that productivity is good, and good prices, so that soybean results cover production costs, which are very high, and also make it possible to pay off the balance of debts acquired in the 2nd harvest", analyzes the president.
In relation to the numbers, when considering what was planted (1,740 million hectares), but which was not harvested due to adverse weather conditions, the state's average productivity is 58 bags per hectare.
However, if only the area that was actually harvested is considered (1,586 million hectares), it can be said that Mato Grosso do Sul achieved a slightly higher average: 64 bags per hectare.
Comparatives
In other words, in relation to the total actually planted (1,740 million hectares), we had an 8,8% loss of area, therefore reaching 1,586 million area actually harvested.
Therefore, in this equation, the most correct thing to say is that the final average productivity in this 2nd harvest (i.e., the weighted productivity) is 58 sc/ha, given that, at the beginning of the cycle, 1,740 million hectares were of actually planted.
Analysis by municipality
If there had not been repeated climatic instabilities that generated so many losses, the state could have achieved productivity of 75 to 80 bags per hectare. No municipality in Mato Grosso do Sul reached this weighted productivity, on the other hand, 18 cities, out of a total of 45 monitored by Siga MS in this harvest, recorded results above 60 sc/ha. If municipalities with a weighted average above the state weighted average are considered, the number increases to 23 of the 45.
