Winter in the Southern Hemisphere officially begins this Friday, June 20, at 23:42 p.m., and lasts until September 22, at 15:19 p.m. (Brasília time). The forecast from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) indicates that the season will be characterized by lower temperatures, episodes of frost and the possibility of snow in the mountainous areas of the Southern Region.

Climatologically, winter is the least rainy period in the Southeast, Central-West and part of the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, while the highest volumes of precipitation are concentrated in the northwest of the North Region, east of the Northeast Region and part of the South Region of Brazil.

In addition to the reduction in solar radiation, the season is also characterized by the entry of cold air masses from the south of the continent, causing temperatures to drop. Averages should be below 22ºC in areas in the east of the South and Southeast regions.

Expected phenomena include frost in the South, Southeast and Mato Grosso do Sul regions, as well as the possibility of snow in the mountains and plateaus of the South Region. Cold spells are also expected in the states of Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Acre and southern Amazonas.

The formation of fog and humid mist during the mornings will be common in the South, Southeast and Central-West regions, with reduced visibility, especially on roads, mountainous areas and airports.
