Wheat production in Santa Catarina in the 2024/2025 harvest is expected to increase by 40,8%. To date, it has gone from 307 thousand tons to 433 thousand tons harvested, even with a reduction in the planted area from 137,5 thousand hectares to 121,3 thousand hectares, compared to the same period in the 2023/2024 harvest (Epagri/Cepa data). The State Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAR) reactivated the Grain Sector Chamber this year and provides development programs for this important production chain in the state.

Wheat is the second most cultivated cereal in the world. In the last six years, Santa Catarina's wheat production has grown by 180%, while the national production has increased by 76%. According to data from the National Supply Company (Conab), the state of Santa Catarina ranks 5th in the national ranking of the largest wheat producers. The Brazilian harvest in 2024/2025 is close to 7,5 million tons. Brazil's consumption is between 11 and 12 million tons.

According to the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Livestock, Valdir Colatto, the SAR seeks to encourage investment in the sector through actions and programs. “With public policies integrated with the work of Epagri and Cidasc, we seek to provide conditions for the increase and quality of wheat production. The modernization of cultivation techniques, the use of high-quality seeds, the adoption of new technologies and programs to promote winter crops contribute to this process,” says Colatto.

SAR develops programs with Epagri to promote soil improvement and crop productivity on rural properties. The Terra Boa Program supports rural producers to expand the area of grain production. Within this Program, the State Government encourages the Cultivation of Winter Cereals and assists in the distribution of Limestone, with a focus on soil correction and increasing the potential for grain production.

The Grain Sector Chamber, reactivated in October of this year by SAR, Epagri, Cidasc and sector entities, aims to identify development opportunities and priority actions that involve producers and the entire production chain, observing trends in the domestic and foreign markets.
