In search of new sources of supply and self-sufficiency in wheat production, the Brazilian milling industry is turning its attention to the Cerrado. Last week, the Brazilian Wheat Industry Association (Abitrigo) held the first edition of the Abitrigo - Cerrado Tour, bringing around 45 representatives from mills from all over the country to see the crops in the Cristalina region (GO) up close.

During the event, participants visited six rural properties and were able to observe the quality, productivity and expansion potential of wheat grown in the Central-West. According to Abitrigo superintendent Eduardo Assêncio, the initiative helps mills better understand business opportunities in the region, which has been gaining strategic relevance for the sector.

With around 3 million hectares suitable for dryland wheat and 500 thousand hectares for irrigated wheat, the Cerrado is already beginning to show significant results. In Goiás, production increased from 350 thousand tons in 2024 to an expected 400 thousand tons in 2025.

Representatives from mills such as Nita Alimentos, Infasa and Ocrim highlighted the quality of Cerrado wheat and the technological advances in the crops. Local producers are optimistic. Irrigated wheat, with an average yield of 6,5 to 7 tons per hectare, allows for staggered harvests and brings agronomic benefits to other crops.

The expectation is that the strengthening of this new agricultural frontier will reduce dependence on imports and help guarantee supplies to the national milling industry in the coming years.
