VBP is estimated at R$689,97 billion for 2020

o Gross Value of Agricultural Production (VBP) in 2020 is estimated at R$689,97 billion, 7,6% higher compared to the result of 2019 (R$641,35 billion). The estimate is based on data from March and the consequences of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Livestock farming should have the second consecutive year of good results, with expected growth of 6,7% (R$ 236,6 billion), and crops, with an increase of 8,3% (R$ 453,3 billion), highlighting production of corn, soybeans and coffee.

The Agricultural Policy Secretariat of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply highlights that, with the exception of second-crop corn, the grain harvest "is practically closed in the first quarter". "It was observed that the grain distribution system has been occurring satisfactorily", report the technicians, highlighting that the warehouses have also been regularly supplied with horticultural products.

A survey by the USDA – United States Department of Agriculture shows that “world trade in soybeans and corn in April remains practically unchanged in relation to January”.

In crops, the products with the best performance in VBP are: coffee (31,3%), corn (16,9%) and soybeans (12,9%). Those showing a drop compared to 2019 are cotton, grapes and potatoes.

In livestock, growth projections are driven by beef, pork and eggs. “The international market is the most relevant variable for good performance, although domestic prices have been contributing to the sector’s gains. Beef and pork prices are 13,2% and 12,5%, respectively, above those observed last year. The production value of beef and pork is the highest in the last 15 years. Chicken meat shows a slight drop in value, and milk shows lower sales compared to last year”, he explains.
