UPL joins the Climate Pledge, a global commitment that aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions

UPL is the first industry in the sector to become a signatory of the "Climate Pledge", a global commitment created by Amazon and Global Optimism. With this, the company is committed to helping achieve the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement. The initiative already has 200 signatories from 26 sectors in 21 countries.

"At UPL, we believe that global agriculture is about to play its most important role – having first nourished the planet with abundant food, it will now sustain us through a transformative role in combating climate change. Achieving this will depend on rethinking sustainability through the power of partnerships. By joining the Climate Pledge, we are reinforcing our commitment to collaboration and leadership in our industry," said UPL Global CEO Jai Shroff.

UPL is reinventing responsible food production through the application of the OpenAg concept, which, created in 2019, transformed it into a company open to innovation and sustainable development without limits or borders. A global supplier of sustainable agricultural products and solutions, the Indian company has made biological and traditional inputs available for crop protection in more than 138 countries, including Brazil.

Joining the Climate Pledge emphasizes a broader commitment, led by UPL, to transform the role of agriculture into a positive contributor to addressing the challenges presented by climate change, food security, biodiversity loss and water scarcity. Over the last 5 years, UPL has reduced its carbon emissions by 26% and has set itself the goal of reducing a further 25% by 2025.

The former executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and partner at Global Optimism, Christiana Figueres, highlighted that the accession of more companies to the pact helps to act quickly on a problem that is getting worse. "It's encouraging that more companies are joining the Climate Pledge, committing to accelerating their actions to address climate change in a timely manner and playing their role in building a carbon economy. I look forward to seeing the fruits of the leadership we will see in this collective of signatories".
