The Health and Safety Commission of the Interstate Tobacco Industry Union (SindiTabaco) has just launched the Mutual Aid Plan (PAM), an unprecedented inter-institutional cooperation initiative to respond to emergencies in the sector.
Aimed at strengthening safety and preventing risks in high-impact operations in the tobacco production chain, the PAM is a partnership between SindiTabaco, associated companies and the 6th Battalion of Military Firefighters (BBM). The plan aims to share good practices, material resources and engage the community in awareness and safety actions.
Cristian Maciel dos Santos, coordinator of the committee at SindiTabaco, explains that the PAM is the result of years of maturing safety practices among companies in the sector: “We have had similar experiences, but the PAM represents an evolution in the joint work with the Fire Department and other partners to establish a robust internal emergency response system.” Santos highlights that the project has the contribution of technical, legal and operational areas of the associates, including the legal advisory of SindiTabaco.
In addition to safety in industrial operations, PAM has a strong educational component, with activities carried out in conjunction with the Crescer Legal Institute to train educators and young apprentices in fire prevention and first aid. “This knowledge will benefit the workplace and rural communities that are part of the tobacco production chain,” says Santos. The partnership with the Institute allows safety actions to reach families and young people in the countryside, expanding the support network in case of need.
WFP has also conducted training sessions with Bequisa, a chemical supplier, to improve safe handling and fire prevention in fumigation operations. These activities demonstrate SindiTabaco’s commitment to health and safety, a key issue for the agro-industrial sector.
The PAM represents a cooperation model that can serve as a reference for other industrial sectors and regions, by combining prevention, safety and community development. With a focus on workplace safety and community engagement, the initiative is aligned with the values of corporate social responsibility and public safety.
