The Goiana Agricultural Defense Agency (Agrodefesa) seized a truck loaded with empty pesticide packaging in irregular conditions during an inspection operation in the south of the state of Goiás. The inspectors discovered that the vehicle collected and transported packaging in several municipalities, such as Piracanjuba, Morrinhos and Goiatuba, to be used or recycled in a completely irregular manner and outside legal recommendations.

The owner of the truck was fined and will face prosecution for damage to the environment and non-compliance with legislation, in addition to receiving a fine. The seized packages were sent to the Reception Unit located in Morrinhos.

José Essado, president of Agrodefesa, emphasized the importance of inspection operations to prevent damage to public health and the environment. These actions are also crucial to stopping criminal practices related to the handling of hazardous materials.

The situation worsened when Agrodefesa inspectors discovered that empty pesticide containers were not being delivered to stations and reception centers in the region, as they should have been. It is suspected that the material was taken to recycling companies that deal with other types of waste, such as paper and aluminum cans, in inappropriate locations and without legal authorization to treat empty pesticide packaging.

The problem becomes even more critical, as the packaging contained pesticide residue, which could be disposed of incorrectly, harming people and the environment. The legislation requires that packaging be washed and delivered to collection points for sorting and separation. Subsequently, the National Institute for Empty Packaging Processing (inpEV) takes the material to the reception centers, where it is sent to final destination.

The packages seized in Morrinhos were subjected to special sorting, with appropriate disposal of chemical residues. Packaging in recyclable conditions was stored for future disposal.
