The trade war between the United States (USA) and China and the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union dominate the agenda of the 7th South American Agriculture Forum. Trade disputes and bloc or bilateral agreements, which establish a new order in the globalized agribusiness, will be covered across practically the entire event program. The backdrop is South America's leading role, led by Brazil, in this new era of global supply and demand.
As a side effect, the geopolitical reality that opposes the two powers of America and Asia changes relations in world trade and greatly affects Brazil, in terms of risks and opportunities. One of the main examples is in the soybean trade, the commodity with the greatest liquidity on the international market. According to data from the USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), world oilseed trade in the 2018/2019 cycle was 160 million tons, with a 45% share of the Brazilian product. A window of opportunity for Brazil, a consequence of the dispute between the USA and China.
Fábio Carneiro Cunha, from Legex Consultoria, a specialist in foreign trade and one of the Forum's moderators, explains that the trade dispute in agribusiness is just beginning. “This topic will be the main topic of the next decade. An environment where Brazil needs to know more about producing and strategically position itself in the international market”, he states. The analysis of this scenario and the future of this dispute and this context will be present during the two days of the Forum, which takes place on September 5th and 6th, at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Curitiba (PR).
The theme of the 7th South American Agriculture Forum is “From Production to the Market – Global and Sustainable”. The event has already confirmed the presence of the consultant and specialist in European Union trade policy, Emily Rees; the director of the Agricultural and Commodities Division of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Edwini Kessie; as well as USDA economist Warren Preston. In the debates, experts will analyze the variables that could define commercial directions in the coming years, such as innovation, logistics and technology.
