The National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) approved this Friday (17) the increase in the mandatory mixture of biodiesel with diesel sold in Brazil, which will increase from 10% to 12% from April this year. The measure aims to boost national biodiesel production, generating jobs and opportunities for the Brazilian industry.

The approved proposal foresees a gradual increase in the mixture of biodiesel with diesel in the coming years, reaching 13% in 2024, 14% in 2025 and 15% in 2026. The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, highlighted that this change signals a new moment for Brazilian energy policy, valuing the production of biofuels in the country.

The CNPE, responsible for advising the President of the Republic in the formulation of energy policies and guidelines, can bring forward the entry into force of the defined levels if the economic situation and oil production allow. Fávaro stated that, if possible, the Council will meet again to establish a faster increase in the mixture of biodiesel and diesel.

According to estimates by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), national production of biodiesel should jump from the current 6,3 billion liters to more than 10 billion liters annually between 2023 and 2026. Furthermore, the measure should reduce the import of diesel oil by 1,3 billion liters in 2023 and 4 billion liters in 2025. The anticipation of the entry into force of the levels defined today will depend on the CNPE's assessment in relation to the supply and demand of biodiesel and its economic impacts.
