Tereos Açúcar & Energia Brasil, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tereos group, the second largest sugar producer in the world, ends the 2020/21 harvest with several production records. In the harvest, which began in April, the Group's seven units in the country processed 20,9 million tons of sugar cane, the largest crushing ever achieved in the company's history. In the previous period, the company crushed 19 million tons.

Another historical record was the increase in agricultural productivity. The company achieved a yield of 12,2 tons of sugar per hectare (ATR/ha). "Despite the adverse climate environment, with a prolonged drought this harvest, we were able to increase agricultural yield thanks to our investments in agricultural production technologies, improvement of the varietal census and the evolution of Tereos' digital transformation, with more assertive and agile use of data , improving operations in the field", commented Jacyr Costa Filho, member of the Executive Committee of the Tereos group.

Investments made in recent years in the seven industrial units and management changes have resulted in a progressive increase in industrial performance, allowing for a historic record in daily crushing of 120.300 tons of sugarcane. "In addition, there was an important increase in sugar recovery, measured by industrial efficiency of 92,2%", added the executive.

In a year in which the market remunerated the sweetener better, Tereos' production mix closed with 63% sugar and 37% ethanol. Sugar production reached a record of 1,9 million tons, growth of 19% compared to the 2019/20 harvest. Even with a lower percentage of the mix this harvest, ethanol grew 11%, reaching a volume of 730 million liters. By the end of the year, the company is expected to reach a total of 1.150 GWh of co-generated and commercialized bioelectricity, also a record. This is an increase of 18% compared to the volume of the previous harvest. Adding this volume sold to the energy consumed by the operation and donated to institutions, the total cogeneration should exceed 1.600 GWh.

According to Costa Filho, even in a year of pandemic, as a company with activities considered essential, Tereos kept all of its industrial units in operation, following the preventive measures indicated by health authorities. "The priority was to preserve the health of our employees, suppliers and customers, maintaining our commitment to producing food, biofuels and energy safely and with high quality."

At a challenging time, the investment in logistics made in partnership with VLI was essential to support Tereos' sugar exports, which registered an increase of 60%. The estimate is to export 1,15 million tons of sugar this harvest, also a historical record. Having a logistics system that prioritizes the railway mode, in addition to increasing loading capacity, has made the Group even more competitive, an important factor in the sugar-energy sector, as well as being more sustainable, as the use of railways contributes to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

"This was a very positive year in our sustainability journey. In March, we completed the certifications of all units for the RenovaBio program, starting the commercialization of CBIOs from July. In June, we announced the first sustainable financing for the sugar-energy sector, linked to green goals. And the biogas production project was started, from vinasse", concluded Costa Filho.
