Syngenta obtains authorization to market the herbicide Pinoxaden

With the publication of Act 64/2022 by the General Coordination of Pesticides and Related Products of the Ministry of Agriculture, Syngenta is authorized to market certain herbicides with the active ingredient... pinoxaden (pinoxadem).

The commercial products that received authorization were:

• Almane: for wheat and barley;

• Axial: for wheat and barley;

• Radis: for wheat and barley;

• Sedum: for wheat;

• Traxos: for wheat.

There is a request in progress for the use of the product in soybean cultivation.

Pinoxadene as a herbicide was discovered by Syngenta researchers and described in a 2009 publication (doi.org/10.1016/j.bmc.2008.12.062). However, the substance pinoxaden has been known for longer. For example, on March 31, 2004, Syngenta requested authorization from the European Commission for its use on plants. Final approval was granted on March 15, 2016.

Pinoxaden is a herbicide for use on cereals such as wheat, barley, rye or triticale. It is applied post-emergence to control grasses such as those of the genera Alopecurus, Open, Oatmeal, lolium, phalaris e setaria.

Formulations containing pinoxaden are marketed by Syngenta in several countries under the brand name Axial. The product, as a herbicide, was invented by Donald John Porter, Shawn Chignell Potter, Xinyun Wen and Colin Douglas Miln, all related to the company.
