Syngenta has launched Spiropidion (spiropidione), a new insect control technology that will help farmers protect their crops against harmful sucking pests in an effective and environmentally sustainable way.
Sucking pests such as aphids, whiteflies and scales devastate high-value fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, oranges and melons, as well as important arable crops such as cotton and soybeans. According to the company, Spiropidion is safe for natural beneficial insects and pollinators, offering farmers a new tool for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.
Spiropidion is the result of chemical-driven innovation within a rare class of insecticides that helps crops from within by protecting the entire plant body from attack by harmful sucking pests, thus ensuring crop quality as well as yield and farmers' productivity.
“We are excited to offer farmers a new active ingredient that provides more precise protection against some of the toughest and most damaging sucking pests. The best way I can think to describe this innovation is that it’s kind to nature, but tough on pests,” says Global President of Syngenta Crop Protection, Jon Parr.
“Spiropidion is another clear example of how we are accelerating investment to deliver innovative crop protection solutions that support farmers around the world to grow productively and sustainably.”
The first global registration of a product formulated containing Spiropidion was obtained in Guatemala in September 2020, where the product will be commercialized under the ELESTAL Neo brand in the coming months. Planned launches of formulations containing Spiropidion also include Paraguay and Pakistan in 2021, and Brazil in 2023 (registrations pending). In the European Union, regulatory submission is scheduled for 2022-2023. Future launches in a wide range of crops in more than 60 countries, on all continents, are planned for the next six years, with estimated sales in excess of US$ 400 million.
