AgBiTech brings global president and entomologist Paula Marçon to Siconbiol
Leader of the Research & Development area, executive addresses baculovirus-based insecticides as a tool for Integrated Pest Management
With the theme Advances and Challenges of Biological Control in Brazilian Agriculture, the professor at Escola Superior Luiz de Queiroz, University of São Paulo (Esalq/USP), José Roberto Postali Parra, opens on August 11th, starting at 19:30 pm, the 16th Biological Control Symposium (Siconbiol), promoted by the Entomological Society of Brazil and Embrapa Soja, at the Ney Braga Exhibition Park, in Londrina (PR). The event has more than 700 participants and, due to the great interest, registration is closed online, but can be done at the event location. However, the organizing committee does not guarantee the folder with materials for the last registrants.
The objective of the event is to debate innovations involving different aspects of biological control, covering development and application. Embrapa Soja researcher, Adeney de Freitas Bueno, president of Siconbiol, explains that biological control of plant pests and diseases can be natural (which occurs naturally in the most balanced environment or crops conducted with correct management) or via control applied biological or augmentative (when predators, parasitoids or entomopathogens of pests and diseases are intentionally released into the environment).
“Sinconbiol aims to highlight the different themes related to the development of biological control that involve entrepreneurship and commercialization in biological control; biotechnology and biopesticides formulation; interactions of biological control with other integrated pest and disease management tactics; in addition to the bottlenecks in the use of biological products in the field, among other topics”, highlights Bueno.
The technical program includes 35 lectures, 28 round tables, a poster session with the presentation of 423 technical works and an oral presentation of 21 selected scientific works.
On the agenda, there will also be the Neotropical Entomology Symposium: highlighting research on biological control at 13pm, from 13:30pm to 18pm. The event coordinated by the journal Neotropical Entomology chose five of 30 articles submitted to be presented at the Symposium. The schedule can be consulted here.
During Siconbiol, a Talk Show is also scheduled on the achievements in the adoption of biological control in forest plantations. The Talk Show format allows for broad debate on the role of applied research in the biological control of forest pests and has greater interaction with the audience, more time for questions to the debaters, the importance of cooperation for the development of solutions in the management of forest pests and biological control as a business: market and lessons for the forestry sector. See more here.
In addition, new products and services already available on the market from 10 input and technical assistance companies will be presented at institutional stands. The Producer Arena will be set up between the stands. In this space, during breaks in the scientific program there will be a presentation of success stories of start-ups, in addition to demonstrations of products and services. See the schedule here.
Commercial interest in biological products grows every year, so much so that the Brazilian Association of Biological Control Companies (ABCBio) highlights that the commercialization of organic agricultural products in Brazil jumped from R$ 262,4 million to R$ 464,5 million, from 2017 to 2018.
