The Campo Limpo System, an initiative supported by Sumitomo Chemical for the conservation of the environment and the development of more sustainable agriculture, broke a record for receiving agricultural pesticide packaging in 2021. 53,6 thousand tons of empty packaging were properly disposed of , exceeding the target initially projected for the period and demonstrating an increase of 7% compared to 2020. With this result, in December last year, the record mark of 650 thousand packages destined since the beginning of the project's operation was reached, two decades.

Sumitomo Chemical is part of inpEV (National Institute for Empty Packaging Processing), the managing entity of the Campo Limpo System. According to João César Rando, CEO of inpEV, the good results are a consequence of the active participation of all links in the agricultural chain in the packaging disposal process. “Thanks to everyone’s joint work, the high capillarity and maximum efficiency of our reverse logistics program, today 92% of the pesticide packaging sold in Brazil is disposed of in an environmentally correct manner”, he highlights.

According to Sumitomo Chemical's Sustainability Manager, Gizelle Neves, we work with producers and distributors with specific training so that returns are made correctly and within the deadlines established by Brazilian legislation. “The work to educate rural producers and other initiatives have made the System a global reference in sustainability.”

Expressive results

As for liquid resources, Sumitomo Chemical's participation in the Campo Limpo System in 2021 prevented the consumption of 8 million liters of water, the equivalent of eight thousand boxes of water and the daily consumption of 40 thousand people. In energy savings, 324 million MegaJoules were saved during the period considered, a quantity of fossil energy resources equivalent to the annual supply of 47 thousand homes. Regarding climate impacts, the company's sustainability work prevented the emission of 6.719 tons of CO2, enough carbon for 127 trips around the Earth.
