Data from the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA-Apta), from the São Paulo Department of Agriculture and Supply, show in a sectoral analysis of agribusiness, the result from January to August 2023 was 6,9% higher compared to the same period in last year. This means that there was an increase of 5,6% in exports, reaching US$17,84 billion, and 0,6% in imports, totaling US$3,44 billion.

In the total of the State of São Paulo (adding up all sectors of the economy), exports of agricultural products from the State of São Paulo are 39,1%, while the share of imports is 7,1%.

The participation of São Paulo agribusiness in national agribusiness, in the eight months of 2023, stood out in the following product groups, whose share in values ​​exceeds 50% of the national total: juices (84,6%), various food products (75,4% ), live plants and floriculture products (67,6%), sugar and alcohol complex (63,4%) and other products of plant origin (63,3%).

São Paulo's exports stand out from other sectors of the economy, excluding agribusiness, with a sum of US$27,80 billion, and imports, US$45,31 billion, generating an external deficit of US$17,51 ​​billion. However, it can be concluded that this negative balance of São Paulo's foreign trade was not greater due to the performance of agricultural businesses in the state, whose balance remained positive, in the range of US$ 14,40 billion.

For agribusiness, sectoral exports from São Paulo in the period analyzed represented 15,8% in relation to Brazilian agribusiness, an increase of 0,2 percentage points. compared to the same period in 2022; Imports increased (0,5 percentage points), going from 30,3% to 30,8%.

São Paulo exports by product groups

In the first 8 months of this year, compared to 2022, there were important variations in the exported values ​​of the main product groups in São Paulo, with increases for the sugar and alcohol complex groups (+25,9%), juices (+16,4%) and forestry (+1,0%), and a drop in the groups of meat (-25,8%), coffee (-10,0%) and soy complex (-3,6%). These variations in foreign trade revenues are derived from the composition of fluctuations in both prices and exported volumes.

The five main groups in São Paulo agribusiness exports from January to August 2023 were: sugar and alcohol complex (US$6,09 billion, of which sugar represented 87,5% and ethyl alcohol – ethanol, 12,5% ); the soybean complex (US$3 billion, with 84,5% of the grain); the meat sector (US$2,01 billion, of which beef accounted for 80,9%); forestry products (US$1,78 billion, with 50,5% cellulose and 41,5% paper) and the group of juices (US$1,33 billion, of which 97,4% refer to orange juice).

These five aggregates represented 79,6% of foreign sales by sector in the State. The coffee group, traditional in exports, appears in sixth position, with sales of US$631,47 million (68,1% referring to green and 24,5% soluble).

Exports of the main products from São Paulo

In the same period, data on the value and volume exported of the main products of the most relevant groups in the State were analyzed, among them, sugar and alcohol is the one with the largest share (34,1%), an increase of 25,9% in values and 6,6% in foreign sales volumes, following the behavior of sugar (+30,1% in values ​​and 6,3% in volume), the main product, with emphasis on the 21,9% appreciation in the average price of the commodity in the period. As for alcohol (ethanol), shipments increased by 11,2% in volume and 2,5% in value. The results point to the main buyers: China (9,8%), Nigeria (7,1%), Morocco (6,7%), India (5,5%), Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia (5,4%, each one), European Union (5,2), South Korea (5,1%) and Algeria (4,9%); the other countries 44,9%.

The soybean complex sector had a positive performance and was in second place, with an increase in shipments (+8,4%) and a drop in values ​​(-3,6%). Grains, the main product, showed a negative change in values ​​(-5,4%), but with an increase in volumes (+6,4%), compared to the same period in 2022. China (66,9%) is the main destination in terms of value share, followed by Thailand (5,5%), Iran (5,2%), Indonesia (3,8%) and Argentina (3,3%); the other importers account for 13,3%.

In fourth place on the São Paulo agenda, the group of forest products had some stability from January to August 2023, with an increase of 1,0% in values ​​and a decrease of 1,6% in the quantity shipped in relation to the same months of the previous year. Exports of cellulose products, the group's main item, showed an increase in values ​​(+11,3%) and in shipments (+5,9%). Paper registered negative variations in values ​​(-4,4%) and volume (-16,7%). The main destination in terms of share of exported values ​​is China (34,1%), followed by the European Union (13,1%), United States (9,5%), Argentina (7,5%), Peru (5,3. 5,0%) and Chile (25,5%). Other countries account for a XNUMX% share.

Orange juice (concentrated and frozen FCOJ) recorded increases of 20,8% in value and 0,6% in exported volume. For NFC juice (not frozen), external sales gained in value (+30,9%) and volume (+22,6%). Other non-fermented orange products saw increases of 0,7% in values ​​and a drop of 15,8% in volumes. The total variation in exports from the juice group was positive in value and volume (+16,4% and +13,8%, respectively). The biggest buyers in this group are the European Union (50,4%), the United States (34,9%), China (4,9%) and Japan (3,3%); the remaining buyers have a 6,5% share.

For the coffee group, the results showed drops of 10,0% in values ​​and 11,3% in the volume of exports from São Paulo. The main product of this group is green coffee, which showed lower sales of 15,1% in value and 11,0% in quantities exported by the state; Instant coffee grew by 3,9% in value and decreased by 15,2% in volume sold. The European Union is the main destination and its purchases represent 39,6% of the exported value. Following are the United States (15,7%), Japan (7,7%), Argentina (7,6%), Canada (3,9%), South Korea (3,0%), the United Kingdom and China (2,9%, each) and the other countries participate with 16,7%.

Imports from São Paulo agribusiness

The main import products of São Paulo's agribusiness from January to August 2023 were: paper (US$270,00 million), followed by salmon (US$259,31 million) and wheat (US$227,35 million).

General and agricultural trade balance in Brazil

The Brazilian trade balance recorded a surplus of US$62,41 billion from January to August 2023, with exports of US$224,58 billion and imports of US$162,17 billion. This result presents an increase of 42,7% in the surplus compared to the same period in 2022, when it reached US$43,72 billion.

In the sectoral analysis, Brazilian agribusiness exports from January to August 2023 increased (4,2%) in relation to the same period in 2022, reaching US$112,68 billion (50,2% of the national total). Imports fell by 1,0% in the period, registering US$11,17 billion (6,9% of the national total).

The agribusiness surplus reached US$101,51 billion in the period, 4,8% higher compared to the accumulated result from January to August 2022.

Brazilian agribusiness imports

The main Brazilian products, analyzed in the same period, were: wheat (US$913,11 million, accounting for 2,77 million tons, 34% lower than the volume imported in relation to the same period in 2022), paper (US$601,11 million ), malt (US$540,45 million), salmon (US$528,10 million) and powdered milk (US$509,00 million).

Participation of the State of São Paulo in Brazil

São Paulo's participation in the total Brazilian trade balance (all sectors of the economy) showed stability in exports and an increase of 0,2 percentage points in imports in the accumulated period from January to August 2023, pointing to values ​​of 20,3% in exports and 30,1% representation for imports.
