The cucumber production calendar in Brazil varies depending on the region, due to the prevailing climate and, despite being well adaptable in different seasons, the most significant production is in the summer, since the cold limits development and reduces the storage time. harvest.

Faced with this reality, the Superseed line has developed a diverse portfolio of hybrid cucumbers, increasingly seeking to incorporate and improve resistance packages according to what each region needs. This requires knowledge of the national market, monitoring changes and trends and correctly positioning new window products so that they achieve high performance in the field.

Today Superseed has three cucumber hybrids: Tikara, Zebu and Vectra, varieties that have achieved good results among producers.

Examples include producer Márcio Ferreira Pereira, who has been planting cucumbers for 22 years in Campo Leal, district of Sumidouro (RJ). On average, he plants half a hectare at a time, or seven thousand plants, three times a year and the entire crop production is directed to the two markets that exist in the city, in addition to going to Conquista and Irajá, in Rio.

“I am very satisfied with the Tikara cucumber. I've been working with the material for six years and my crops are all his. The beauty of the product is very important for Japanese culture and it has a lot of this, in addition to productivity, which this year was especially high. It has everything I look for in a Japanese cucumber and in this region, in my opinion, it has no competition, it is the best.”

The cucurbits specialist at Agristar do Brasil, Rafael Zamboni, explains that Tikara is a parthenocarpic Japanese cucumber, with a vigorous plant and good adaptability, especially in regions where it is planted in open fields. “It has short internodes, few male flowers, in most cases each internode has a fruit, which stands out for its market standard, excellent brightness and post-harvest”.

Zebu Cucumber

In Goianápolis (GO), producer Rodrigo Cardoso has already planted six thousand Zebu cucumber plants this year. “The plant stands out for its vigor, well-differentiated fruit setting and fewer abortions. Furthermore, the fruit is very well accepted at Ceasa de Anápolis, people praised the standard and beauty very much”, he explains.

Another producer who bet on the variety is Francisco Aldeisio Ferreira Souza, who is on his first Zebu cucumber farm, in the city of Guaraciaba do Norte, Serra da Ibiapaba region, in Ceará. “I have already planted many varieties of cucumber, but I had never found one with incredible quality and productivity like the Zebu cucumber. There are 17 thousand plants in which I observed large, uniform fruits, very resistant to rain and diseases and without yellowing the edges. It is also having great acceptance at Ceasa, so I am very satisfied with this material and will plant it in more areas”, explains Francisco.

Zebu is from the American Slicer segment, better known in Brazil as aodai, common cucumber and even black cucumber. “It has a very strong fruit set, with an excellent resistance package, a very dark green color, fruits with excellent post-harvest standards”, explains the specialist.

Vectra Cucumber

In the producing region of Paranapuã, in the northwest of São Paulo, is Laércio Chiaradia's farm, already in its fourth year of production with Vectra seed. He says that the strengths of the Vectra cucumber are its resistance to the main diseases of the crop, its plant health, in addition to its standardization and dark color, “very attractive”, according to him.

Vectra is a dark country cucumber and stands out for its high fruit set and color pattern. According to Zamboni, it has been standing out in the main producing regions. “For the commercialization of the fruits, it is important that they have a very dark and uniform green color, a characteristic presented by Vectra. In addition to having an excellent package of resistance to the main diseases that attack the crop”, comments the specialist.
