A survey conducted by FIESP with 514 agricultural producers from all over Brazil shows that 29% of farmers and 35% of cattle ranchers do not intend to seek financing for the next harvest. Most of them prefer to use their own resources, and the reason for this decision is the obstacles in obtaining credit or financing. Among those interviewed by the Brazilian Agribusiness Trends Monitor, 54% pointed to high interest rates and 23% indicated bureaucratic requirements and a slow approval process as the main obstacles.
The same survey indicates that 69% of farmers and 52% of livestock farmers obtained some type of financing in the last harvest, with the main objective being the acquisition of inputs and equipment. Among those who financed their operations, 33% sought credit from official banks, 17% from private banks, 15% from resellers and 13% from credit unions.
The Brazilian Agribusiness Trends Monitor shows that high initial costs and the cost of credit are also the main challenges faced by Brazilian agricultural producers in investing more in technology.
In both agriculture and livestock, agronomists, consultants and industries/manufacturers are the ones who most assist in decision-making about which technologies to acquire. The survey also indicates that 58% of respondents are intermediate technology adopters, that is, they usually adopt new technologies after observing other colleagues; 20% are pioneer adopters, that is, they are the first to adopt and experiment with new technologies, while 19% are late adopters - they wait until a new technology becomes common before adopting it.
Another detail that draws attention is the sector in which each profile investigated invests most in technology. Among farmers, data analysis and investments in bioinputs stand out, while livestock farmers mentioned animal nutrition as a focus.
According to the survey, for the current harvest, farmers intend to invest more in limestone (18%), maintain investment in pesticides (79%), invest less in machinery and equipment (23%) and not invest in irrigation (75%).
Among livestock farmers, the trend is towards greater investment in reform, pasture recovery (28%) and maintenance of the same levels of investment in concentrate (70%).
Commissioned by the Agribusiness Department of FIESP to Kynetec Brasil, the Brazilian Agribusiness Trends Monitor interviewed producers of all sizes and from the main crops, based on their share in the gross value of agricultural production: grains, sugarcane, coffee and livestock. The objectives of the survey are to observe patterns of behavior, expectations and trends of agents operating in agribusiness and to identify the need to develop or improve public policies for the sector, in addition to providing subsidies for the strategic planning of agribusinesses.
