Stock of agricultural products drops 17% in the first half of the year

The stock of agricultural products in Brazil fell by 17% in the first half of 2020, totaling 52,9 million tons, compared to 63,7 million tons in the previous period. The data comes from the Stock Survey, released today (10) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

All products fell. The most significant were corn (28,1%) and coffee (23,0%). The largest volume stored was soybeans (30,8 million tons), followed by corn (13,3 million), rice (4,1 million), wheat (1,9 million) and coffee (839,4 thousand). These products account for 96,2% of the total stock among those monitored by IBGE.

Storage

The available capacity for storing agricultural products in Brazil closed the first half of 2020 at 176,5 million tons, a drop of 0,7% compared to the previous half. The number of establishments decreased by 0,5%, according to IBGE.

The largest number of storage establishments is in Rio Grande do Sul, with 1.920, and the largest capacity is in Mato Grosso, with 43,8 million tons. Among the types of establishments, silos predominate with an increase of 0,2% and 86,8 million tons of useful storage capacity, which represents 49,1% of the total.

Bulk and bulk warehouses came in second place, responsible for 37,7% of national storage, with 66,5 million tons of usable storable capacity, a drop of 0,3% compared to the previous period. Conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses totaled 23,3 million tons, a drop of 4,8% compared to the second half of 2019, and represent 13,2% of the country's total storage capacity.

The IBGE counted 7.903 active establishments in the first half of 2020. Only the South Region had an increase of 0,3%. The North Region had a drop of 0,9%, the Northeast of 1,9%, the Southeast of 1,8% and the Central-West decreased by 0,6% the number of active establishments.
