The Gross Value of Agricultural Production (VBP) for 2021, calculated based on information from August, is estimated at R$1,106 trillion, 9,7% higher than that obtained in 2020 (R$1,008 trillion).
The value of crop production was R$749,9 billion and livestock production was R$356,5 billion. Crops grew by 11,9% in real values, and livestock grew by 5,4%.
The products that most boosted the VBP were rice (3,9%), sugar cane (4,3%), corn (6,8%), soybeans (28,5%) and wheat (38,6%). %).
According to José Garcia Gasques, coordinator of Policy Assessment and Information at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, the contribution of these five products is due to good production and price results. They account for 81% of the crops' VBP.
In livestock, those that contributed most to the increase in VBP were beef (6,8%) and chicken (12,5%).
International trade, through exports, has been a relevant variable for growth. In the first six months of the year, revenue from meat exports was US$11,1 billion and from the soy complex, US$34,2 billion.
According to the research coordinator, prices have been decisive this year. “Considering chicken and beef meat, wheat, soybeans, corn and cotton, it is observed that these products have the highest prices in the last 17 years. It is also observed that this year, coffee obtains the highest price received by producers in the last nine years” he argues.
On the other hand, there is a large group of products that have been making a negative contribution to VBP. Many of them, such as bananas, potatoes, coffee, beans, oranges, tomatoes, pigs and eggs, have a relevant weight in the IPCA. “Therefore, these products must be monitored more closely”, warns Gasques.
The negative contribution of coffee, for example, saw a sharp drop in production this year, which in return presented a high increase in prices received. “The price increase did not prevent a drop in the coffee VBP, as the reduction in production was very strong (-29,6%)”, comments Gasques.
The regional results show a leadership in the states of Mato Grosso, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais, which represent 63% of the 2021 VBP.
The VBP shows the evolution of crop and livestock performance throughout the year and corresponds to the gross revenue within the establishment. Calculated based on the production of agricultural crops and livestock and the prices received by producers in the country's main markets, of the 26 largest agricultural products in Brazil.
The real value of production, discounted for inflation, is obtained by the General Price Index - Internal Availability (IGP-DI) of Fundação Getúlio Vargas. The periodicity is monthly with updates and publication until the 15th of each month.
