Genomics Research Center for Climate Change offers free course in plant biotechnology

As a preventive measure to control Asian rust, the main pest that attacks soybean crops, Tocantins begins this Friday, July 1st and continues until September 30th, the sanitary void period, where planting and the maintenance of live oilseed plants in rainfed crops.
During the period of sanitary void, the Agricultural Defense Agency (Adapec) will carry out monitoring and inspection in the field to ensure that there are no live soybean plants within the prohibitive period. “It is important to highlight that the producers or occupants of the area are responsible for eliminating all live soy plants, whether voluntary or not, and this control must be done by chemical or mechanical means. And those who are notified by Adapec for maintaining soybean plantations or for not eliminating volunteer plants will be subject to sanctions provided for by law,” explained Adapec's Plant Health Manager, Marley Camilo.
According to the legislation, only the exceptional cultivation of soy for research purposes and production of soy seeds for personal use in the tropical plains, under a sub-irrigation system, which comprise the municipalities of Lagoa da Confusion, Dueré, Pium, Santa Rita, Formoso do Araguaia and Cristalândia.
In the 2021/2022 harvest, 1.994 properties with soybean cultivation in Tocantins were registered with Adapec.
It is the main pest that affects the oilseed crop, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi. It spreads quickly between crops through the wind. The biggest damage caused is the reduction in productivity, as it causes premature defoliation in the plants, preventing the soybeans from forming completely. Sanitary emptiness is an important form of pest prevention.
