The deadline for harvesting soybean seeds in the Tropical Plains, which covers the municipalities of Lagoa da Confusão, Cristalândia, Pium, Formoso do Araguaia, Santa Rita do Tocantins and Dueré, ends this Saturday, the 20th. The exceptional planting of soybean seeds during this period is authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
From the beginning of the planting window, between April 20 and May 31, until the end of the crop cycle, the Government of Tocantins, through the Agricultural Defense Agency (Adapec), monitored 100% of the 93 registered rural properties, which together totaled a cultivated area of 50.350 hectares. "The monitoring conducted by Adapec aims to prevent and control Asian soybean rust, the main pest affecting the crop," highlighted Cleovan Barbosa, technical manager of Adapec's State Asian Soybean Rust Control Program.
"The exceptionality that Tocantins has in this region of the Tropical Plains, of planting soybeans for seed production and seed reserves for its own use — known as legal saving — places the state in a prominent position in the commercialization of high-germination seeds, thus confirming its potential in grain production," said Adapec president Paulo Lima, adding that the seeds produced in the plains supply not only Tocantins, but also Goiás, Mato Grosso, Maranhão, Pará, Piauí, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Roraima, among other states.
Asian rust is the main pest affecting soybeans, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhiziIt spreads rapidly among crops through the wind and causes great losses due to reduced productivity, as it causes premature defoliation in plants, preventing complete grain formation.
