The farmer can count on the quality and reliability of certified seeds when planning a new super soybean harvest. According to the Brazilian Association of Soy Seed Producers (ABRASS), as the harvest advances and is consolidated in Brazilian states, the choice of cultivars and advance purchases of the input that is the basis of productivity in crops also increases. .

The entity highlights that despite the adverse weather conditions recorded in this cycle, with an emphasis on drought in the south of the country and excessive rainfall in the Cerrado during the harvest period, the sector is equipped to continue offering a range of advanced options in biotechnology, quality and vigor at sowing. .

“We noticed in some regions, occasional failures of some cultivars, especially those with an earlier cycle, which does not prevent the producer from accessing other options and providing satisfactory service to the soybean farmer. We are talking about an open-air industry, subject to climate influences. At the same time, the high professionalization seen in seed multiplication companies in recent years maintains the link of trust between rural producers, genetic improvement and biotechnology”, says André Schwening, vice-president of ABRASS.

In this relationship of trust established between supplier and customer, seed companies and soybean growers, this period of the year takes the farmer to a special dedication to the careful choice of cultivars. “The farmer has done this advance planning in a very visible way and, within the current situation, it is an even more valid strategy. The seed industries see this positively, because they are able to produce more assertively the materials that are actually desired by customers”, points out Schwening.

Provenance

The ABRASS representative recalls that certified seed is a guarantee of origin, mitigating health risks and strengthening food security. Contrary to these benefits, the estimate is that in some regions of the country the use of non-certified seeds reaches 30%.

“It is important to make it clear that we, seed multipliers, are not against saved seed, which is a legal guarantee and an option that the producer has to produce his own seed. The problem is that in several cases and regions this law is violated and there are farmers who use this subterfuge to sell non-certified seeds, which is prohibited by law. It should be noted that these seeds do not pay germplasm royalties, thus not remunerating genetic improvement, perhaps the main factor in increasing productivity in recent years. What we will continue to do is engage in transparent dialogue with the entire production chain about this issue.”
