Itaconate identified as growth regulator in corn
Previously known for its immunological action in mammals, the acid also regulates metabolism in plants
The National Union of the Plant Protection Products Industry (Sindiveg) was one of the supporters of BioSummit 2025, held last week in Campinas (SP). On the second day of the meeting, lawyer Lidia Cristina Jorge dos Santos, from FS Advocacia and a member of the entity's legal team, represented Sindiveg in the panel “Does the current regulatory framework meet the needs of the bioinputs sector? What are the main challenges?”, focused on discussing regulatory issues.
During her presentation, Lidia highlighted the importance of the new Law 15.070, which regulates the production, commercialization, use and inspection of bioinputs in Brazil. According to her, the new legal framework was widely debated in the Legislature and meets the expectations of the sector, but the main difficulty lies in the implementation phase.
“The challenge now is to turn things around. The law has been in force since the end of last year and needs to be put into practice. What does not depend on regulation should already be applied,” he said.
Sindiveg's participation reinforced the entity's position to exclude biological control products from the Pesticide Law, recognizing their specific market and production characteristics. Among the advances brought about by the new legislation are the definition of specific concepts, the regulation of the sale of inocula and on-farm production, in addition to the simplification of registration for similar products and specific requirements only in cases of innovation.
However, as also pointed out in the panel, the sector still faces challenges such as the transition period, the need to regulate the collection of inappropriate packaging and products, the reorganization of sub-legal standards, as well as the redefinition of responsibilities between regulatory spheres. The readjustment of state standards and the application of existing tax benefits were also highlighted as priorities. “Progress in the sector depends on a well-defined, efficient regulatory framework that is compatible with the speed of innovations in agribusiness. Meetings like this are essential to point out directions that favor the sustainable development of the area”, stated Lidia.
In addition to Sindiveg, the panel was attended by the federal agricultural tax auditor of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), Henrique Bley; the director of Institutional Relations of the National Association of Producers and Importers of Inoculants (Anpii Bio), Julia Emanuela; the director of Regulatory and Scientific Affairs of the Brazilian Association of Bioinnovation (ABBI), Marcos Pupin; the manager of Federal Regulation of the National Association of Phytosanitary Product Companies (Aenda), Amanda Bulgaro; the executive director of Biological Products of CropLife Brasil, Amália Piazentim Borsari; and the executive director of the National Association for the Diffusion of Fertilizers (Anda), Ricardo Tortorella.
