Seven new coffee brands are disqualified for consumption

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) issues a risk warning to consumers regarding seven new brands and batches of roasted coffee that were disqualified after being deemed unfit for consumption.

The presence of foreign matter and impurities above the limit permitted by Ordinance 570/2022, which establishes the official classification standard for roasted coffee, was detected in them, which is why these products were considered unfit for consumption. Foreign matter is debris of any nature, unrelated to coffee, such as grains or seeds from other plant species, sand, stones or clods. Impurities are elements originating from the coffee plant, such as husks and sticks.

The seizure of batches of coffee unfit for consumption is part of the National Program to Prevent and Combat Fraud and Illegal Trading in Products of Plant Origin (PNFraude), and aims to reduce the occurrence of fraud and promote regularity in establishments producing products of plant origin. The coordination is the responsibility of the Department of Inspection of Products of Plant Origin of the Secretariat of Agricultural Defense. After analyzing the laboratory reports and notifying the responsible companies, MAPA releases the data and will determine the collection of unsuitable products.

The Ministry advises consumers who have purchased these products to stop consuming them and request a replacement in accordance with the Consumer Protection Code. Complaints can be made through the Fala.BR channel, informing the establishment and address of the purchase.

It is important to emphasize the correct interpretation of the specific criteria that underpin the list in order to avoid mistakes and unfair interpretations. The disqualified lots result from the cross-referencing of data such as brand, lot, responsible company, federative unit of the packer, presence of registration in the CGC/Mapa and specific types of irregularities, which may range from composition problems to administrative issues.
