Corteva Agriscience, in partnership with the Brazilian Sugarcane Producers Association (ORPLANA) and the FIA Business School, promotes the second edition of the Agribusiness Succession Academy. The initiative, with the purpose of contributing to the training of 50 young people from business families in the sugarcane sector, helping them in the family succession process, runs until May 2023.

In the project, the successors of producers associated with ORPLANA who already work on the family property, participate in online and live classes taught by professors from the FIA Business School. The course will address the topics of governance in family-controlled companies and the challenges of succession, financial management aimed at the partners of this company profile, corporate and tax planning models to protect family assets, behavioral skills and their relationship with the decision-making process and new drivers of the business environment, such as innovation and ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance).

In addition to classes and webinars, the second edition of the Agribusiness Succession Academy will feature “Family Day”, a face-to-face closing meeting with mentoring and presentations of course completion work with the participation of families to exchange experiences.

Inaugural Class

The activities of the second class began this Thursday (27/10), with the inaugural class “Jornada do Sucessor”, taught by professor Armando Lourenzo, professor at FIA Business School, PhD in Administration with an emphasis on governance in family businesses, researcher, speaker and author of several books on the area. On the occasion, Lourenzo addressed the path that young people and their families must follow for the business to continue growing, how successors can develop their careers in this environment and the key factors for a successful succession.

According to Redson Vieira, Sugarcane Leader at Corteva, it is essential to prepare people to take over the family business. “We were very successful with the first edition of the project, training 100 new leaders who are already applying the concepts they learned in practice. The new edition reinforces that relevant and updated knowledge is fundamental for the progress of future generations and the sugarcane sector”.

“The program is of great importance as it focuses on the future of business. It is necessary to prepare successors in sugarcane production so that they are integrated into the family business from an early age. We, at ORPLANA, know the relevance of the topic and it is gratifying to have partners who share the same vision and purpose, always keeping an eye on the future of the sugar-energy sector”, says Gustavo Rattes de Castro, president of ORPLANA.

For Armando Lourenzo, professor at FIA Business School, it is extremely important to guide and train professionals in the area to take over companies. “Brazil is such a diverse country and has an agribusiness path with so many opportunities that it is necessary to have projects and actions to actively contribute to these professionals who are always retraining and working to build solid enterprises and companies”, he comments.
