The wheat harvest outlook in Rio Grande do Sul remains favorable, and crops show high production potential. According to the Economic Bulletin released today (October 2) by Emater/RS, of the total planted in the state, 13% is in vegetative development, 37% is flowering, 40% is grain filling, and 10% is maturing. The progress of areas nearing maturity demonstrates the high production potential of this harvest, but confirmation is still dependent on the weather until the end of the cycle.

The dry weather and bright light provided a favorable environment for crop development, which is in critical reproductive phases such as flowering and grain filling. These factors also accelerated the physiological maturation of ears in areas planted earlier, contributing to greater cycle uniformity and increased dry matter accumulation potential in the grains.

Phytosanitary management has been intensified, particularly as a preventative measure in areas with a history of fungal diseases. Emater/RS estimates the cultivated area in the state at 1.198.276 hectares, with an estimated productivity of 2.997 kg/ha.

White oats

Producers accelerated the harvest of white oats during the period, before the rains, and achieved very satisfactory yields, exceeding 3.000 kg/ha in some regions. However, in the Northwest, irregular emergence impacted part of production. Harvested areas have been released for summer cultivation. Overall, the crops maintain adequate development and phytosanitary conditions, although there are occasional reports of fungal diseases, which are controlled by fungicide applications.

Canola

The canola harvest in Rio Grande do Sul is progressing satisfactorily, and yields are expected to be very good, especially in the more technologically advanced crops. The rising price of the crop, now higher than that of soybeans, is also encouraging farmers. Crops are nearing the end of their growing season, and most crops are in the grain-filling and maturation stages.

Regarding crop health, the incidence of pests and diseases is low. However, producers continue to use preventive fungicide and insecticide management in flowering and silique-forming areas to minimize production costs. Emater/RS projects an area of 203.206 hectares and a productivity of 1.737 kg/ha.

Barley

Barley crops are growing well in the state, especially in the Plateau, where most of the production is concentrated. Dry weather and good sunlight during the period favored the maturation of crops close to harvest time.

Yield prospects remain positive, especially in crops grown at a higher technological level, intended for malt production.
