The recent rise in coffee prices in Brazil, which has been felt by end consumers, is the result of a multifactorial scenario that is not limited to adverse conditions in the field or in the foreign market. To understand this scenario and the challenges that producers in São Paulo must face during this period, the Technical Working Group on Coffee Farming, composed of agricultural engineers from the Comprehensive Technical Assistance Coordination (Cati), an agency of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply of the State of São Paulo, has prepared a special technical publication on the subject.
"More than just understanding the impacts of rising prices on the market, it is necessary to understand the reality of coffee growers in São Paulo and what opportunities there are for improving this segment, which is historic and continues to reinvent itself. We hope that CATI Responde 63 will take a broad look at the current scenario and allow us to expand discussions about the coffee market," says agronomist Rodrigo Binotti, leader of Cati's Coffee Growing Technical Group.
Alexandre Manzoni Grassi, director of the Rural Extension Department at Cati, emphasizes the importance of the coffee chain for the state. “The coffee produced here is largely family-based. We have encouraged and promoted coffee obtained through family farming, a coffee that brings quality from the field to the cup. Also, as a way of crowning all the effort and work carried out in the field, we annually hold the State Competition 'São Paulo Coffee Quality', promoted by the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply, which has revealed excellent coffees, edition after edition”, he concludes.
