The rice harvest in Rio Grande do Sul continues at a fast pace and has already reached 71,31% of the total area planted in the state. As of last Thursday (10), more than 604 thousand hectares had been harvested, according to data released by the Rio Grande do Sul Rice Institute (Irga) through the Safra platform.
The Outer Coastal Plain region stands out in terms of progress, with 87,14% of the area already harvested. Next comes the Western Border (82,53%), the Inner Coastal Plain (77,67%) and the Campanha (63,72%). The South Zone and the Central Region have the lowest percentages, with 56,01% and 53,75%, respectively.
According to Luiz Fernando Siqueira, manager of the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Division of Irga, the weather has been a concern. “In the last few days, we have had intense rainfall and strong winds, especially in the South Zone and Central Region — precisely the areas with the highest percentage yet to be harvested. These weather events can negatively impact productivity,” he warns.
Harvest data is updated weekly by the Safra platform, a digital tool from Irga that gathers accurate information on the progress of sowing and harvesting in the state's six rice-growing regions. The system is supplied with field data collected by 37 offices spread across the main producing areas.
With Rio Grande do Sul responsible for around 70% of the country's rice production, the performance of the harvest in the state has a direct impact on the supply of the grain in the country. The sector expects that, even with adverse weather conditions, the volume harvested will be sufficient to meet domestic demand and maintain the competitiveness of Rio Grande do Sul's producers.
