Embrapa, in partnership with Basf, developed a new rice cultivar. It comes from BRS Pampa, called BRS Pampa CL, which will be launched at the 29th Rice Harvest Opening, which takes place in February at the Terras Baixas Experimental Station (ETB), where one of Embrapa's experimental bases is located, in Capão do Leão, in Rio Grande do Sul.

The BRS Pampa CL has the same characteristics as the BRS Pampa, but now incorporated into the Clearfield system, which facilitates the management of red rice. The new cultivar is the result of genetic improvement by Embrapa, obtained through the backcrossing of BRS Pampa, and “PUITÁ INTA-CL”, as a parental donor of the gene for tolerance to the herbicide Kifix, from the chemical group of imidazolinones.

According to Ariano Martins de Magalhães Júnior, researcher in genetic improvement at Embrapa, and responsible for conducting the work with BRS Pampa CL, the old cultivar, with its original formula, was not resistant to herbicides for weed control. Among the advantages of BRS Pampa CL is greater precocity and productivity as it facilitates management in cultivation areas with an incidence of red rice, the main weed species affecting the crop. “These are qualities that we imagine the producer will adopt immediately because they already know the previous version”, says the researcher.

Still for Ariano, BRS Pampa CL has shown greater productivity. “It has the same grain quality that the industry demands. It has no susceptibility problems with the main diseases, showing moderate resistance, mainly to blast”, he detailed.

BRS Pampa CL is considered a modern plant, with tillering capacity and needle-like grains. According to the researcher, its productivity in the state of Rio Grande do Sul reached above 10ton/ha. In addition, it also has grains of industrial and culinary quality, making it classified as “premium” or noble rice.

Researcher Arino Martins Júnior remains optimistic about the new cultivar. “Our expectation is that BRS Pampa CL will tend to occupy a large space in the state”, he estimated.

The 29th Rice Harvest Opening takes place on February 20th to 22nd, and the new BRS Pampa CL cultivar will be launched on the first day of the event, at 16:30 pm, in the main auditorium of Embrapa's Terras Baixas Experimental Station, during the program of the Technical Forum. There will also be other plots indicated for production in lowlands, such as BRS Pampeira and BRS A701 CL.

In its 29th edition, the event will have 32 demonstrative rice and soybean crops, which will be presented by promoters and partners. In addition, there will also be demonstrations of summer pastures and species management techniques, as well as soybean management in Crop-Livestock Integration (ILP) areas.
