After its interruption due to the hydroenergy crisis in Brazil in 2021, water transport on the Tietê-Paraná Waterway is scheduled to be resumed next Tuesday, March 15, in what is one of the main waterways for transporting Brazil's grain harvest. Brazil for export. However, this return to activity may be delayed by up to a day depending on hydro-meteorological conditions, rain and influxes over the next few days.

For this return to water transport to be possible, the operation will take place using flow waves released by the reservoir of the Nova Avanhandava hydroelectric plant (SP), which is located on the Tietê River. Therefore, the rise in the water level in the Tietê-Paraná Waterway will be partial and will be conditioned by these flow waves. With this, navigability will gradually resume with an initial draft (depth) of 2,4 meters.

On March 7, a meeting took place with representatives of the Public Power and companies operating on the Tietê-Paraná Waterway to discuss the issue of resuming water transport activity in the region. As a result of this meeting, it was agreed between the National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA) and other institutions present to resume activity in the region.

The decision was taken based on operational forecasts for the reservoirs of the National Interconnected System (SIN) presented by the National Electric System Operator (ONS), according to which there was an improvement in the conditions of the SIN reservoirs and in the prospects for water storage.

In addition to representatives from ANA, the meeting was also attended by the ONS, Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), Ministry of Infrastructure, Waterways Department of the State of São Paulo, National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), Secretariat of Infrastructure and Environment of the State of São Paulo, Department of Water and Electric Energy of the State of São Paulo (DAEE), waterway operators (shipowners), among other participants.

The Tietê-Paraná Waterway

With more than 2.400 kilometers of riverways, the Tietê-Paraná Waterway has locks in hydroelectric dams and channels to enable water transport in the region, which includes an area of 76 million hectares with portions of Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná and São Paulo. The Waterway is also a multimodal transport system, serving as an export corridor mainly for grains.
