The Farsul System and the Pró-Sementes Foundation released the results of the Network Cultivar Trial (ECR) of the 2022/23 soybean harvest in Rio Grande do Sul. The Soja ECR is a survey on the cultivation of the grain in the state. It serves as a tool to assist decision-making.

The current study was carried out in three producing microregions, which are divided into 11 municipalities. Harvests from two different sowing seasons in the cities of Bagé, Cacequi, Cachoeira do Sul, Júlio de Castilhos, Lagoa Vermelha, Passo Fundo, Pelotas, Santo Augusto, São Gabriel, São Luiz Gonzaga and Vacaria were analyzed.

Forty cultivars were analyzed in the period, defined through the largest representation of hectares approved for seed production, according to the Agricultural Zoning of the Ministry of Agriculture (Mapa). The cultivars were separated into two groups. The first with GM 5.0 to 6.1 (31 cultivars); the second with GM 6.1 to 6.5 (nine cultivars). The technologies used were Ipro, IX2, E and RR. The range of regional productivity in the study varied from 17 sc/ha, in Cachoeira do Sul, to 77 sc/ha, in Vacaria. The maximum productivity achieved was in Vacaria: 108 sc/ha.

The two tests conducted in Bagé, as well as the tests conducted in the Pelotas and Cachoeira do Sul floodplains, were lost due to the effects of drought. The research and development manager at Fundação Pró-Sementes, Kassiana Kehl, pointed out that "the weather conditions were very difficult, we had a very severe drought. This harvest saw an inversion in the productivity of areas in the state. Last year the highlight was the productivity in the southern half, this year the situation has become better for the northern region."

Kehl used samples from Cachoeira do Sul to exemplify the drought situation in the state, "the water demand of soybeans, from planting to harvest, varies between 450mm and 800mm. In Cachoeira do Sul, for example, the total rainfall did not reach not even the minimum necessary. It's a very critical situation."

Gedeão Pereira, president of Sistema Farsul, also highlighted the period of drought that Rio Grande do Sul is going through. "In the last two summer harvests, our sector was strongly impacted by the drought, shortly after having reached the position of second largest producer of soy."
