The XIV Brazilian Soil Classification and Correlation Meeting: RCC of Goiás and Tocantins (XIV RCC) starts this Saturday (08/10) and continues until October 15th. The technical-scientific event, whose main objective is to contribute to the improvement of the Brazilian Soil Classification System (SiBCS), will cover a region with strong bioclimatic contrasts and landscapes that include areas of savannah, high-altitude fields and extensive alluvial plains of the Araguaia River .
The tour itinerary includes a route from south to north of the states of Goiás and Tocantins, from Goiânia (south) to Palmas (north), with the examination of 14 soil profiles by dozens of participants and technical-scientific collaborators. Approximately 1.800 km will be covered along the BR-153, GO-239, TO-040 highways and local roads.
Embrapa Solos researcher, José Francisco Lumbreras, who is part of the organizing committee, explains that in addition to enabling the validation of changes included in the 5th edition of SiBCS, launched by Embrapa in 2018, as well as the newly published proposal to update that edition, the XIV RCC is a unique opportunity to provide important knowledge for the development of future editions of the system, as it brings together the country's main professionals familiar with the topic of soil classification, with different experiences and knowledge, in order to discuss SiBCS in front of “problem soil profiles”, which were intentionally and previously selected by the event organizers.
“The XIV RCC is also a stage for the expansion and exchange of knowledge about the soils and environments of the Cerrado biome of the Brazilian Central Plateau between researchers, teachers and other professionals in related areas”, adds Lumbreras.
According to Maurício Rizzato Coelho, also organizer of the event and researcher at Embrapa Soils, several studies were carried out with samples from the 14 soil profiles selected for the meeting, which were compiled in the document entitled “Field Guide of the XIV Brazilian Meeting of Classification and Soil Correlation: RCC of Goiás and Tocantins”, to be distributed to participants during the tour. “These studies range from environmental characterizations, physical-water, physical, chemical, micromorphological and mineralogical analyzes and interpretations of soils, to the assessment of the agricultural suitability of the land, contributing to the advancement of knowledge of the soils and environments of the region covered, in addition to enable new scientific partnerships for future research”, explains Rizzato.
The XIV RCC is promoted by the Central-West Regional Center of the Brazilian Society of Soil Science (SBCS) and organized by the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), Embrapa Pesca and Aquaculture, Embrapa Solos, Instituto Federal Goiano (IF Goiano), Embrapa Arroz and Feijão, Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) and Association of Agricultural Engineers of Goiás (AEAGO).
