Increased cotton production in BR brings new challenges for research
According to Embrapa's document, sustainability must be combined with increasing biodiversity in the cultivation system
The week was marked by rainy weather, making it impossible to implement wheat crops. According to the Economic Information released by Emater/RS-Ascar, on Thursday (06/06), in the regions of Alto Jacuí, Celeiro and Noroeste Colonial, desiccation of some crops was resumed at the weekend, requiring sequential use of herbicide, due to the germination of ryegrass and oats in areas destined for wheat cultivation. In previously established areas, there is good emergence; The plants improve the visual aspect with the reduction in precipitation and the better light that occurred at the weekend.
Barley producers are waiting for ideal soil moisture conditions to continue sowing. The past week has not been favorable. In already established crops, there is good plant emergence. Weather conditions prevented the completion of oat planting in the Northwest Frontier and Missões regions. Crops already established show yellowing due to low cloud cover and moist soil. Reports continue of incidences of foliar diseases, caused by excess humidity, and caterpillar attacks in crops at the beginning of vegetative development, which could affect productivity.
High soil humidity caused delays in the implementation and management of herbs in canola cultivation. In the regions of Alto Jacuí, Celeiro and Noroeste Colonial, the initial development of the crop is slow, and crops experience high slug attacks, leading to the need for control in specific areas.
Alfalfa producers in the Northwest Frontier were unable to cut the crop, as the high soil humidity, precipitation and lack of light are making the drying process of the crop difficult, leading producers to increase the interval between cuts. In areas that have already been implemented with the crop, mainly lower areas, producers continue to report plant rot, due to soil fungi. And linseed producers confirm the reduction in expected cultivated area in the Northwest Frontier and Missões regions, as well as the reduction in investment in basic fertilization due to the difficulties in marketing the product and the higher value of fertilizers.
In relation to summer crops, with the soybean harvest closed in the field, farmers are focusing on the business of the stored product that has not yet been carried out. As the period saw a predominance of rainy weather in a large part of Rio Grande do Sul, the evolution of the corn harvest was slow and was only carried out in specific locations where field conditions permitted. Only around 2% of the crop area in the State remains to be harvested. Rice farming is in the off-season and rice farmers are looking at future business. From now on, producers begin planning for the next harvest. And the weather conditions of the week also prevented the good development and evolution of the second harvest beans. The phases evolved slowly, and harvesting of ready areas could not be carried out. This long period of high humidity caused a loss of quality and productivity in the crop that remains in the field. Due to these conditions, some of the beans harvested are of low quality, with sprouted grains, due to the abundance of rain in May.
