Excessive rain has worried fruit growers in Petrolina, in the Sertão of the state. On many properties, crops are flooded and vineyards have been cut down.

According to the Petrolina Rural Producers Union (SPR), around 2 thousand fruit growers have already reported damage from the latest rains in the municipality.

The Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of Pernambuco (Faepe) requests urgent action from the government to mitigate losses and allow producers to continue their activities, as occurred in other regions.

“It is necessary to check which of these producers have rural insurance to mitigate such significant financial losses”, asks Pio Guerra, president of the entity.

“In addition to the losses, the floods affected the quality of the fruits and will significantly increase the costs of cultivating the orchards. Furthermore, damaged fruits lose value on the market”, said the president of Faepe.

He also recalled that the rains that occurred at the beginning of the year had already caused serious damage to the São Francisco Valley.
