Public consultation will review standards of the National Seeds and Seedlings System

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) will receive suggestions for the review of the National Seed and Seedling System (SNSM) until April 6th. It was published this Wednesday (19), the 42 Ordinance  which submits the rules of the National Seed and Seedling System to public consultation for a period of 45 days.

Decree 5.153 of 2004 will be revised to simplify procedures relating to the production of seeds and seedlings and subsequent activities, such as processing, packaging, storage, analysis, trade, import and export.

According to the general coordinator of Seeds, Seedlings and Cultivar Protection at Mapa, Virgínia Carpi, “the simplification and debureaucratization of the rules for the production and commercialization of this multiplication material is necessary due to the dynamics of this producer segment, which has developed a lot in the last 17 years".

“Business models have changed and companies are ready for self-control tools and good practices”, she said. The coordinator also highlights that Brazil has great potential for the production of seeds and seedlings, including for export.

 The seeds and seedlings sector in Brazil is the third in the world in terms of revenue, with a turnover of US$7,6 billion/year. It is behind only the United States with US$12 billion and China with US$10,8 billion. In the 2018/2018 and 2018/2019 harvests, estimated seed production was around 4.802.675 tons and 7.992.609 tons, respectively. 2.200 producers provide seeds and 4.663 are responsible for seedlings.
