The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) opened extraordinary credit worth more than R$230,8 million to meet programs aimed at sustainable agriculture and research and innovation activities in Rio Grande do Sul. The objective is to minimize the losses caused by the disaster climate that devastated several cities in the region. The Provisional Measure was published this Friday (19) in the Official Gazette of the Union, allocating resources to the Rural Insurance Premium Subsidy Program (PSR) and promoting agricultural research and innovation in the state.
Of the total amount allocated in the MP, an increase of R$ 210,9 million was directed to the PSR in order to assist producers in Rio Grande do Sul. The program offers farmers the opportunity to maintain their production at a reduced cost, through financial assistance from the Federal Government.
The economic subsidy granted by Mapa can be claimed by any individual or legal entity that cultivates or produces species covered by the Program and also allows the values to be supplemented by subsidies granted by states and municipalities.
The other R$ 20 million was directed to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) to promote research, development and transfer of technologies for agriculture, maintenance and modernization of the physical infrastructure of the company's units in the state and support for technical assistance actions and rural extension.
During a working meeting of the Mapa Itinerant Cabinet with representatives of the agricultural sector in Rio Grande do Sul, this Thursday (18), minister Carlos Fávaro highlighted that “with a good increase, it is possible to double the number of area covered and double the number of producers covered by Insurance for the next harvest”, he said.
Rural Insurance is one of the highlights of the 2024/25 Harvest Plan, which for Minister Carlos Fávaro, needs special attention. “It is President Lula's determination, rural insurance to improve efficiency for Rio Grande do Sul, for the state that required the most resources for rural insurance and even more so from now on”, reinforced Minister Fávaro.
Ordinary resources for Rural Insurance in Rio Grande do Sul were in the order of R$ 134,4 million, grew 17% and reached R$ 157,4 million. And extraordinary resources, another R$210,9 million, totaling R$368,3 million. "What does that mean? From 12 thousand to 26 thousand producers covered by Rural Insurance in Rio Grande do Sul. From 669 thousand to 1,2 million hectares covered by Insurance. From R$5,5 billion to R$11 billion in insurance. 100% increase to bring more peace of mind to these producers”, he explained.
