World coffee production for the 2017-2018 crop year was reestimated and is expected to reach a volume equivalent to 158,56 million bags, which denotes a small reduction of 0,3% compared to the same previous period. In this scenario, a 6,6% drop in the production of Arabica coffees is also estimated, which should harvest a volume of 97,16 million bags, and, on the other hand, an increase in Robusta coffees of around 11,5% , as this type of coffee will produce 61,40 million 60kg bags this year.
Specifically in relation to the total production of Brazilian Coffees in this harvest, which is estimated at 58,04 million bags, which is equivalent to 36,6% of the world's, of which 44,33 million bags are Arabica and 13,71 .45,6 million bags of Robusta, it appears that Brazilian Arabicas correspond to 22,3% of Arabicas and Brazilian Robustas to XNUMX%, compared exclusively with these same types of coffee worldwide.
Based on the global harvest figures cited, compared to the same previous period, it appears that production is expected to increase in almost all producing regions on the planet. Thus, increases of 5,3% are expected in producing countries in Africa, a continent that will reach a total volume of 17,63 million. There will also be a 7,9% increase in production in the countries of Asia & Oceania, whose harvest was estimated at 48,44 million. And there will also be a 7% increase recorded in Mexico & Central America, a region that will produce something like 21,92 million 60kg bags. On the other hand, in the coffee growing regions of South America there will be an average reduction of 8,2% in production, which will involve harvesting approximately 70,57 million 60kg bags.
These numbers and analyzes of the performance of global coffee farming are contained in the Coffee market report – June 2018, from the International Coffee Organization – ICO. This Report is available in full at Coffee Observatory, from the Café Research Consortium, coordinated by Embrapa Café. Additionally, it is worth clarifying that the ICO coffee year (Coffee year) at a global level covers the period from October to September.
As also stated in the ICO Report, with specific regard to coffee exports, the volume exported in May 2018 was 9,27 million bags, a number that represents a reduction of around 12,4% below the total exported in May of last year. Contributing to this decline was the fact that exports of Robusta coffees decreased by 4,4%, which reached a volume of 3,65 million bags, and, more than that, exports of Arabica coffees also decreased by 17%, as they reached just 5,62 million.
For the ICO, in accordance with the Coffee market report, although in May 2018 exports of 'Colombian Milds' coffee increased by 11,6%, totaling 1,08 million bags, this increase did not compensate for the drop in exports of 'Other Milds' and 'Brazilian Naturals' ', according to these coffee classification parameters adopted by the Organization. In this case, exports of Other Milds decreased by 15,5%, the volume of which was 2,46 million bags, and those of Brazilian Naturals decreased by 27,9% - with 2,08 million. With this performance, the total exported in the period from October 2017 to May 2018 was 0,5% lower than that exported in the same previous period.
As a result, in the first eight months of the 2017-2018 coffee year, exports of Arabica coffees fell 2,4%, totaling 50,2 million bags, and exports of Colombian Milds and Brazilian Naturals fell 6,8% (9,45 .4,1 million bags), and 22,95% (2,6 million), respectively. On the other hand, exports of Other Milds increased by 17,76% - with 29,79 million, compared to the same previous period. In the same period, Robusta exports reached 2,8 million bags, that is, XNUMX% above the previous volume.
