Around 2010, oats of uncertain origin took over Rio Grande do Sul's fields during the winter harvest. Known as Ukrainian, these oats entered the country clandestinely, possibly coming from Mercosur countries.
In 2012, a group of researchers from Fundação Pró-Sementes and Agroalpha began studying these plants. From then on, the so-called Ukrainian oats underwent selections, VCU trials (cultivation value and use for registration) and seed production.
After years dedicated to the search for knowledge and the genetic improvement of the species, the two companies put the first Ukrainian oat cultivar registered in Brazil on the market. This is the cultivar AF 1340, a late-cycle forage white oat, high tillering, high green mass production and bromatological quality. The material is recommended for grazing or silage and recommended for the entire southern region of the country.
