One of the factors that can drastically affect agricultural productivity is weed infestation. According to Embrapa, the losses generated by this weed competition range between 13% and 15% of grain production on average. To help corn producers control these invaders, Bayer launched Adengo, a pre-emergent herbicide that has two active ingredients with different mechanisms of action (isoxaflutole and thiencarbazone), ensuring a broad spectrum of control, acting on both broad leaves and narrow leaves, as explained by Adolpho Lemos, Bayer Selective Herbicides Portfolio Manager for Latin America.

“The horseweed, pigweed, crow's foot grass, mattress and milk grass (Euphorbia heterophylla), among other weeds, compete for water and nutrients, negatively affecting the productive potential of the corn crop, in addition to harming the farmer's entire production system”, says Lemos. “They can also cause damage to the harvest, when their branches intertwine with the corn plant, preventing the harvester from operating correctly.”

The producer from São Luiz Gonzaga (RS), Otávio Caino, says that the solution helped him control the main weeds, even the most resistant ones. “Adengo is a great tool for making our crops cleaner, having a smoother harvest and then delivering better planting conditions to subsequent crops,” he says.

The product, tested on more than 522 properties in the 2021/22 summer and off-season harvest in all producing regions of Brazil, totaling more than 77,3 thousand hectares, brought important productivity gains. Even in a year with a drier climate and lower production potential, the average obtained with the management of Adengo, added to a post-emergence herbicide, was 2,8 bags per hectare (sc/ha) more compared to the traditional model (post-emergency application only).

Adolpho Lemos also highlights that both in the summer and in the off-season, the best results of Adengo were observed in areas with greater weed infestation, in crops with high productive potential and planted in the hottest and most humid periods, in which the productivity gain exceeded 15 sc/ha more when compared to the conventional model.

According to the Bayer manager, there was a reduction of more than 85% in the emergence flow of weeds in the test areas with Adengo. Another feature, called Recharge Effect, exclusive to Adengo, guarantees even more convenience for the producer. “Even in a drought situation, like the one that impacted the development of corn last year, or in a summer, for example, the product can remain in the soil without being degraded and, when moisture returns, its herbicidal effect is reactivated”, concludes Lemos.

The new solution has a stable formulation and can be applied with or without straw, always in the pre-emergence of corn, ensuring effectiveness in controlling the weed seed bank, enhancing corn productivity and leaving the area cleaner for subsequent cultivation. . Adengo also helps producers like Rafael Moreno, from Santo Ângelo (RS), to produce more sustainably. “The product has a longer residual effect on the area, so I didn’t need to make other applications afterwards and I was able to harvest cleanly.”

The official launch of Adengo will take place online on November 3rd, at 18pm (Brasília time). During the live, panels will be presented on the scenario of weeds in corn crops, how the solution comes in to help the producer in control and a presentation of the results obtained in the test areas, in addition to cases from producers. Technology in the field

Another tool that helped producers increase productivity, aiding in decision-making, was the adoption of digital tools, such as Bayer's Climate FieldView platform. Of the 113 producers who applied Adengo to their summer crops, 55% used the tool for different purposes, 14% for planting, 28% for spraying and 36% for harvesting.

“Technology arrives to add even more value to production, helping producers to make decisions based on information and the history of their own plots. Therefore, we constantly invest in the development of technologies that help to offer agronomic solutions personalized to the needs of our customers”, concludes Adolpho Lemos.
