PR 2024/25 Harvest: frosts and pests affect harvests in the state

The progress of the harvest in Paraná has faced a series of challenges in recent weeks. According to the Weather and Cultivation Conditions Bulletin released this Tuesday (27) by the Department of Rural Economy (Deral), the second corn crop continues to be harvested at a slow pace. Despite good productivity in some regions, areas affected by drought have recorded irreversible losses. 

The forecast of frosts for the next few days is worrying producers, since part of the crops are still susceptible to the intense cold. The high incidence of leafhoppers is also a cause for concern.

The second bean harvest reached 2%, but productivity is below expectations due to the strong attack of whiteflies. Grain quality was also affected, especially in black beans, with a reduction in size and consequent price discounts. Although some areas showed improvement in the last week, the general scenario is still one of losses. Most crops are at an advanced stage, with a low risk of frost.

The irrigated rice harvest is nearing completion, with good yields per hectare, but rice farmers are facing a sharp drop in prices. The cassava harvest is progressing with productivity as expected, as is the sugarcane harvest.

The coffee harvest has reached 21%, and the favorable weather, combined with market prices, is encouraging producers. The second soybean crop is also being harvested, with productivity close to expectations, although sales are slow.

Other crops continue to develop: the second crop of potatoes is performing well in irrigated areas, despite low prices; wheat has reached 2% of the planted area, with a good start to development; and barley has reached 63% of the planting, with an intensification in the delivery of inputs by cooperatives. Fruits such as avocado, citrus fruits and papaya stand out for their quality in the Center-South region.

Pastures remain in good condition, but there are already signs of water deficit in some areas, with rivers and streams showing low water levels.
