Port of Rio Grande (RS) records increase in grain and general cargo movements

Polyethylene, soybeans, wheat and cellulose were some of the products that registered growth

The movement of polyethylene, soybeans, wheat, cellulose, wood chips and potassium chloride through the Rio Grande port complex recorded increases in the period from January to August 2024, compared to the same period last year. The figures obtained reflect the moment of recovery of Rio Grande do Sul, after the greatest climate tragedy in its history.

Used in a variety of applications, polyethylene is a type of plastic that has seen an 8.67% increase in its movements. In 2023, loading, unloading and transportation operations reached 394.675 tons, while this year they reached 428.884 tons.

The second product that showed growth was soybeans, which varied positively by 3.45% and went from 5.720.659 tons in 2023 to 5.917.923 tons in 2024. With an increase of 3.32%, wheat appears in third position, with cargo that went from 2.376.712 tons moved in 2023 to 2.455.673 tons.

Produced in Guaíba, at the CMPC factory, Rio Grande do Sul's cellulose increased by 1.82% and reached 2.418.107 tons in 2024. Wood chips are the fifth most traded product, reaching 694.336 tons, an increase of 1.73% compared to last year. Potassium chloride increased by 0.74%.

Container movement in the Rio Grande do Sul port complex also saw an increase of 25.71%. From January to August, 505.979 TEUs were moved, a unit of measurement corresponding to a 20-foot container. The most significant month was June, when 77.432 TEUs were moved.

Exports made during this period had as their main destinations China (6.075.089 t), Vietnam (863.781 t), the Philippines (727.876 t), Iran (726.717 t) and the United States (632.289 t). Imports came from China (1.039.219 t), Argentina (994.304 t), Russia (516.647 t), Morocco (454.413 t) and the United States (396.630 t).
