Planning and integrated management are the main tools against resistant weeds

Mato Grosso recorded an increase in the incidence of difficult-to-control weeds in the last harvest, which impacts production costs

Weeds can be one of the main limiting factors in soybean production. In Mato Grosso, in the last harvest, an increase in the incidence of weeds in crops was recorded, caused by the increase in species that are difficult to control, which impacted the cost of production. Given this scenario, it is important that the producer and team carry out more robust and advance planning.

According to Autieres Farias, researcher at the Mato Grosso Agricultural Research Support Foundation, MT Foundation, the main way to control weeds is to plan in advance, use integrated management, correctly survey the invasive plant species and their respective stage of development. “Being able to explore cover management techniques, early desiccation, use of pre-emergents and good technology in the application of agricultural pesticides.”

Another recommendation from the specialist, a doctor in Phytotechnics, is to have a system view, that is, to have the ability to integrate the past, analyzing the history of the area; the present, knowing how to make decisions effectively and efficiently; and the future, with measurement of the impacts of the actions taken. For Autieres, more than producing, it is important to understand data and information from the past, present and future.

“It is this vision that enables good agronomic practices, helps in the adoption of integrated management, and contributes to the development of the productive potential of plants. It is important to integrate physical, biological and mechanical control with herbicides (chemical control). The capabilities and limitations of products must always be respected”, explained the researcher.

According to him, the use of cover crops, such as brachiaria and sunn hemp, can be used as biological control of weeds, as they cover the soil and prevent the appearance of invasive plants. “In this process, cover crops end up competing with weeds, and also produce allelochemical compounds that inhibit the growth and development of weeds. They must be adopted whenever the level of weed infestation is very high”, pointed out Autieres.

This information is being disseminated by the researcher at É Hora de Plantar 2019. At each event, Fundação MT provides recommendations for the next harvest. Furthermore, the public can report their experiences and ask questions.

É Hora de Plantar 2019 has already been held in Sapezal, Campo Novo do Parecis, Tangará da Serra and Nova Mutum. Today, Wednesday (21st) night, it will take place in Lucas do Rio Verde, tomorrow, Thursday (22nd), it will be held in Nova Ubiratã and Sorriso, in the morning and evening respectively. On Friday (23), it will be the turn of the Sinop production class to welcome the event's technical team. At night the tour will take place in Tapurah. Participation in the event is free and registration is done at the event location.
